Several major European hockey nations had their deadline yesterday. Many people are unsure about these European transfer deadlines. The IIHF and EuroHockey.net give some insight in these transfer regulations as well as what happened on D-Day.
Contrary to general belief, there is no common European signing deadline. All the different national leagues have their own set of rules regarding eligibility, quotas for foreign players and signing deadlines.
The IIHF handles all international transfers between member associations and transfers to and from the NHL to member associations. The IIHF administrates over 3000 player transfers annually.
For an international player transfer to be valid, it must be registered on an International Transfer Card (ITC). The ITC must be signed by the national association of the country the players comes from, by the national association of the country the players transfers to and by the transferring player. When all three parties have signed the ITC, the IIHF approves the transfer.
The IIHF itself has no signing deadline and approves transfers all year round.
Transfer deadlines of major European leagues
Austria: January 31 (Exception: one foreign player per club can be replaced with another foreigner till the end of the season.)
Czech Republic: January 31
Finland: January 31
France: November 15, 2004 (Exception: a player can be signed as a replacement for an injured player, if the predicted length of injury exceeds six weeks.)
Germany: February 15
Italy: December 12, 2004
Russia: December 10, 2004
Slovakia: January 31
Switzerland: February 25
Sweden: January 31
This means that no less than clubs from five major nations faced the fact that they would no longer be able to mutate their squads. January 31st marked the transfer deadline and for sure it didn't go by unnoticed.
