Lady Byng to Selanne?

Just a thought, wouldn't he be a sure candidate this season (probably his last)?

Or does the game misconduct vs Red Wings ruin his chances?

He strikes me as the perfect man winning this award.

41 years old.
Scoring leader.
Lets just give him some final recognition.

Recent winners:

2010/2011: Martin St. Louis - 82 games, 12 PIM's.
2009/2010: Martin St. Louis - 82 games, 12 PIM's.
2008/2009: Pavel Datsyuk - 81 games, 22 PIM's.
2007/2008: Pavel Datsyuk - 82 games, 20 PIM's.
2006/2007: Pavel Datsyuk - 79 games, 20 PIM's.
2005/2006: Pavel Datsyuk - 75 games, 22 PIM's.

Teemu currently has 50 penalty minutes and the season isn't even over yet. Guys like St. Louis, Datsyuk and Eriksson are more productive and takes less penalties. No chance for Teemu.

He could win it if it was only about off the ice attitude, but he *****es to the refs more than most.

No chance...like the poster above me said, he's too vocal with the refs. That doesn't make him look so gentlemanly.

not when he is playing or is vested in the outcome of a game. his "passion" gets the better of him.

wasn't he booted from one of his kids games for this?

great guy off the ice but look out when he is looking for the W.

The Lady Byng trophy isn't exactly much to be proud of anyway. It's basically whoever is the best player with the least PIMs.

There have been some pretty blatant going away-present type Trophy awards - the most recent being Lidtrom's last Norris - but giving the Lady Byng to Teemu this season would probably be the most obvious one ever.

Didn't want to make a new thread for this

Stephens:

Anaheim chapter of PHWA selects goalie Jonas Hiller as Masterton Trophy nominee.

I think that's a great choice. Jonas has been a beast the past months.

I think the Lady Byng Trophy is a bit of "non trophy". I mean, it is not very clear who will win it and based on what. I know, it usually goes to the player who has the best Points/PIM ratio, but the determination for the trophy is this. " player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability".

I mean, when does one of those criterias outshine other? It is always great to get an award, but Byng is the "lowest award" for me, if there is one.

On the topic, i think Selanne is the kind of player that will never get recognized being player like that trophy awards for. Selanne "whines" too much and he also takes fair amount of "stick" penalties. Like tripping, high sticking...

I don't think he has a shot in hell at the Rocket, even next season. The likes of Crosby(health permitting), Stamkos, and Malkin are too good right now. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ovechkin in the running again next season.

Teemu Selanne is the "Finnish Flash" when the game is going on, but, after the whistle blows, he's often the "Fuming Flash."

"If there's any dispute on the ice, if he's on the ice or not, he's getting on the ice," forward Jason Blake said, laughing. "For me, it's comedy. I've never seen anything like it before and I've played 14 seasons."

Selanne's teammates like to call him "T," as in Teemu. If he played basketball, Selanne might be known as "T," too, as in technical. Early this year, the NHL warned Selanne about his on-ice complaining. In the game against the Bruins, he evidently was on edge even when he wasn't standing on his skates.

"Twice, not even the (disallowed) goal, he was almost leaping over the boards," Blake said, smiling this time. "I think we had two penalties and, before they were done blowing the whistle, he was over the bench yelling. It's funny. I love it. That's who 'T' is.

I love him for that. He was WAY UP in the ref's grill the other night. That's a leader. That's a captain.

Yet when Getzlaf does it he gets heavily criticized. Funny how those things work.

Hey, life ain't fair. Maybe if he becomes a franchise icon and Hall of Famer we'll forgive him retroactively for his idiocy.

I think he needs to shave his head and have a Mark Messier freakout party.

That's how it is everywhere it seems. When people want to hate a captain, they always talk about how he "whines". Crosby being the one with the biggest target on his back, most commonly sited. Getzlaf, of course, sited mostly with Sharks and Kings fans. But this is about Teemu.

I love that commercial. This one too...
