It's time for a 6th, 7th or 8th seed to win it all

It's time for a 6th, 7th or 8th seed to win it all

I believe the stat for this is that the lowest seed ever to win the cup was 5th. And it is usually 1,2,3 that always win. This year the New York Giants became the team with the worst regular season record ever to win the superbowl. It's time for a similar thing to happen in the NHL.

As of now here are the most probable 6,7,8 seeds

East
6-Devils
7- Senators
8- Capitals/Sabres (still to be decided)

West
6- Chicago
7/8 - Phoenix, SanJose Dallas Colorado (still to be decided)

Thoughts? and do you see one of these teams listed winning it all this year?

I can only see Chicago winning it out of that group, but they've won recently.

Why? Buffalo can't grab the 3rd seed...

Sorry - has never happened under the current playoff format (1994) and I don't see it happening any time soon! Cream always rises to the top in the NHL.

No chance this year. None of the 6th, 7th, and 8th seeds are good enough to beat the elite teams this year.

The Panthers are 37-42 they won't win if they were in 7th/8th.

Giants won their division though. By NHL standards they're the 3 seed.

Nope. NYR, St. Louis, Nashville, Detroit, Pitts and Phil are too good.

Don't see it happening this year, but parity is becoming more apparent every year. There's a good chance we'll see it in the near future IMO.

Ottawa could do it if they manage to get by Boston.

If the Senators can somehow manage to beat a team that has owned us for the last three years, I'd say they have a good shot at making some noise.

It'll happen eventually. Calgary almost (did? depending how you feel about the blown call in game 6) won the cup in 2004 as a 6th seed. Edmonton was in a coin flip with Carolina in 2006 as an 8th seed.

I'm with you on this, it is always good to watch the lower seeds going into the playoffs win it all or at least make a good run.

No thanks. If the Rangers get knocked out, I wouldn't care, unless the Devils win.

So he forgot to mention Boston, don't take it personally. We all know Boston's an elite force up there with the rest.

Edmonton was 1 game away as an 8th seed after losing its starting goalie for the finals

It can definitely happen, especially with deadline deals, if a goalie gets hot, or if significant players return from injury

None of those teams are good enough IMO. The Devils an MAYBE the Caps if OVI goes into beast mode could go far. But most of these teams (especially in the west) are very flawed.

If the Caps and/or Panthers **** the bed, we'd be more than happy to oblige.

Flyers almost did it against Chicago. Edmonton almost did it against Carolina.

Those are the closest I can remember.

Ottawa will face St. Louis in the final, and will win it in 7.
