2011-12 Dallas Stars Season Grades

I'll just do it in alphabetical order.

Richard Bachman - A- - The way he stepped in Kari when Kari went down was phenomenal. Got some wins in some very tough places to play and played solid as a backup. Couldn't really have asked for much more. Had a couple bad moments, but you have to expect that from a rookie goalie.

Jamie Benn - A - Just unbelievable. Impresses me more and more every time I see him play. Had the two injuries and came back into the lineup both time without missing a beat. Had to play with the likes of Ott and Burish with limited PP time and still came through and produced.

Adam Burish - C- - The guy can't score to save his life. He's a good 4th liner, but has no business being on the 2nd line. Nothing special this season.

Trevor Daley - B+ - Good season for Daley. Solid in his own zone and when he would use his speed and get up on the rush, he looked quite dangerous. I would have liked to see him use that speed a little more and contribute offensively a little more consistently.

Jake Dowell - C - Didn't expect any more or any less, really. Had a few good fights. Not much else to say about Dowell.

Radek Dvorak - B- - He's got such a high compete-level and was great on the 3rd line. Would have liked to see him score a few more goals, but I'll take 20 point season out of him. Was really good on the PK. I was pleased with his first season as a Star.

Loui Eriksson - A - Does he ever do anything wrong? Very rarely. Another 70 point season and amazing play in his own zone. I truly believe he should be a finalist for the Selke Trophy. Outstanding PKer, had the beauty vs. CGY short-handed. Consistent. Consistent. Consistent. I was quite surprised to see a different side of Loui during the last game when he and Oshie sort of went at it.

Vernon Fiddler - B- - Produced pretty well early in the season for a 3rd liner early in the season. Fell off a little bit toward the end, but he was good on the PK. I'll gladly welcome him back next season in a bottom-six roll.

Mark Fistric - C+ - Was a little iffy at times on defense. Usually pretty solid though. Dished out his usual huge hits. Contributed nothing offensively, but it's not like I was expecting him to contribute anything offensively. Not bad, nice bottom pairing guy.

Ryan Garbutt - B+ - Came in late in the season and was an amazing 4th liner. He's the perfect 4th liner. He's physical, full of energy, and not afraid to get into a scrap.

Alex Goligoski - B- - Expected a lot more from Goose. He was solid defensively, but he's an offensive d-man and needed to produce more offensively, especially considering we traded Neal to get him. Definitely needs to pick it up next season.

Philip Larsen - A- - The Stars best defenseman. Unreal rookie season. He's just so smart, rarely makes mistakes defensively. It was nice to see him chip in on offense. Hopefully next season he has a solid stay-at-home defenseman as his partner because I know he has more to offer offensively.

Kari Lehtonen - A+ - Stars MVP. Obviously was a little worn down down the stretch, but he was outstanding. He's solidified himself as an elite goalie in this league. He made so many highlight-reel saves and single-handedly won games for this team.

Brenden Morrow - F - This guy is really our captain . Time for him to go because he was horrible. Slow, took stupid penalties, and just completely terrible. Not gonna waste my time writing anymore about thisad excuse for a captain.

Eric Nystrom - B - What a pleasant surprise. I'll take 16 goals from a 3rd liner any day. Fell off offensively later in the season, but was still solid defensively and was good in the PK.

Steve Ott - D - This guy is not a top-6 player. Took dumb penalties, can't score goals. He's a good 3rd/4th liner, but nothing more.

Adam Pardy - F - Was such a liability every time he was on the ice. I don't want this guy anywhere near the Stars next season.

Mike Ribeiro - C+ - So streaky. When he was playing well, he was amazing, but when he wasn't, he was virtually invisible. I think it's time for him to part ways with the Stars, make some room for some young blood.

Stephane Robidas - D - Time for him to go. The Stars worst defenseman after Pardy. Just looks lost out on the ice a lot of times.

Michael Ryder - A - Outstanding season from Michael Ryder. His 35 goals helped this team tremendously. Hope he can keep it up next season.

Sheldon Souray - Will get to him later.

Tomas Vincour - Will get to him later.

Tom Wandell - Will get to him later.

Surprised more people haven't replied to this.

A -- Benn, Eriksson, Ryder, Lehtonen

C -- Ribeiro, Ott, Fiddler, Vincour, Wandell, Goligoski

D -- Morrow, Dvorak, Burish, Dowell, Robidas, Souray, Grossmann

Any skater who played less than 30 games gets an Incomplete.

To be honest Lehtonen is the only one who deserves an A, where were Benn, Eriksson, Ryder and Co if we needed them the most in the last five games?

Nystrom was a big steal for me and then he turned to one of our worst players. All in all our 3rd line was outstanding in the first 20 games and after then less than medicore.

Not sure how Nystrom turned into one of our worst players. He wasn't at the same level he was when he was trying to prove himself to the new team, sure, but he wasn't one of the worst. That honor (or those) would go to several potential candidates on the back end imo.

Definitely think Fiddler deserves at least a B- though.

I knocked Fiddler down for having his worst faceoff season since 07-08. His production continues to decline as well. A .26 PPG is more befitting a 4th line center than a 3rd. His diving/embellishing didn't win him any favors in my book either.

These are season grades, not last 5 games grades. And if they were last 5 games grades then Lehtonen doesn't deserve an A either.

Pretty much agree on Fiddler. His performance this season disappointed me. He isnt as good defensively as I expected either.

Grade "A" Ratings
Player Position Grade Reasoning
Kari Lehtonen G A+ Huge bright spot for Dallas. Kept us in games, won us games, played like a top 10 goalie.
Jamie Benn C A Improved his game even more while playing like a star two-way center.
Michael Ryder RW A- Exceeded all expectations and while he was inconsistent at times he really played great, especially after the all star break.
Loui Eriksson LW/RW A- Continued his great defense and while he was also inconsistent he still played awesome

Grade "B" Ratings
Player Position Grade Reasoning
Trevor Daley D B+ Played awesome defense for us and while he still showed a poor offensive game his ability to move the puck past the neutral zone was a huge asset. If he had better offensive awareness he's a top 20 defensemen.
Mike Ribeiro C B Didn't always show up but he was still a solid player offensively and as clutch as always
Vernon Fiddler C B- Like most of our bottom six players he wasn't productive at all offensively but he was a awesome on the third line
Steve Ott W B- Why is he here? Because even though he didn't produce offensively and took a lot of penalties (Let's be honest though, a lot of them were reputation calls and not real penalties), when he was performing the role he was supposed to he was great. Ott the third liner is that elite third liner so coveted at the deadline. Let's just ignore Ott the top-sixer.
Richard Bachman G B- Was a pretty good rookie, not great but he played well.
Eric Nystrom F B-/C+ 2011-12 NHL Cy Young candidate. Not consistent offensively but for an energy player to contribute that much offensively? Have to have him up here.

Grade C Ratings
Player Position Grade Reasoning
Phillip Larsen D C+ Obviously still a WIP, so we can forgive him. Wasn't all that good offensively, he improved his ability to mitigate his lack of size and he was solid defensively but nothing to warrant more than a C+
Mark Fistric D C+ Huge physical prescence, but he was nothing more than above-average defensively and he was non existant offensively. Worth a C+ though
Sheldon Souray D C+ Tailed off offensively but like Fistric he was a huge physical prescence and even though he made a lot of bonehead moves defensively he was still as good as Fistric.
Adam Burish W C Not a top-sixer but he's a great energy player and an awesome character guy. Wasn't anything special this year but that energy and leadership helped us for sure, even if we can't see it. We don't have room for him next season but he was a pretty great bottom-sixer for us.
Radek Dvorak RW C Injury problems and inconsistency hurt us but he was still a solid bottom six player.
Ryan Garbutt W D Can't say much since he didn't really play.
Alex Goligoski D C He really never got started this year. Mistakes defensively and his offense was really inconsistent. Hopefully he's back next year good.
Tomas Vincour RW C He never played much and when he did he was invisable or threat to score. Usually the former but he's a WIP like Larsen.
Tom Wandell C/W C- He's a WIP, good energy guy, but to get ranks like the other energy guys did he's gotta do more. He'll be good for us later though

Grade "D" Ratings
Player Position Grade Reasoning
Brenden Morrow LW D+ Can't get away with not being an expected top 6 excuse. Morrow was injured all year and he was never effective at all. He took dumb penalties and wasn't good enough to off set. He's still a good player but he has to be healthy.
Stephane Robidas D D If he was a bottom pairing defensemen he'd be a C but he was used and was expected to be one of our best defensemen. That just wasn't the case. Mediocre defensively, took dumb penalties, not consistent offenisvely.
Jake Dowell C D- Just plain invisable all year. He did absolutely nothing. Not an F because at least he didn't do much negative.

Grade "F" Ratings
Player Position Grade Reasoning
Toby Petersen F F He never played, and when he played he was ineffective. At least Dowell played a lot.
Adam Pardy D F For 2 million, I expected him to play a lot better. Rarely, he played decent. Most of the time, he was invisable. All too often he was downright horrible. I'd rather have Wildcat.

Coach Gully, GMJN and others
Player Position Grade Reasoning
Tom Galiardi Owner A+ Hockey knowledgable, willing to spend, knows what he's doing. He didn't do much yet but awesome guy for moving forward
Joe Nieuwendyk GM B He had solid players this off season and early on. Ryder, Fiddler, Dvorak, Nystrom. He wasn't afraid to send Raycroft down and try Bachman. He made some bad signings in Dowell and Pardy but they're pretty insignificant. He made the right decision not to sell at the deadline and I think he'll draft well this June.
Glen Gulutzan Coach C+ Solid first year. Made mistakes, but he's got great potential going forward. He motivated them more than Crawford but he's gotta trust Benn more, improve the powerplay, and use rookies more. Solid guy though, I'd give him at least another full season (Even if they're horrible)
Jeff Pyle Coach (Minor League) D- Every report coming out of Austin shows that he doesn't really know what he's doing. Completely different style than Gully, they need a change.

Went to a couple Aeros' games against the Stars. I honestly have no idea how Pyle has a coaching job of that caliber. He was so, so bad.

Grade "A" Ratings
Player Position Grade Reasoning
Kari Lehtonen G A Our MVP. He faded down the stretch with the team, but his average play is still above average. When he's on he's elite. This team would be a lottery pick without his hot streaks.
Jamie Benn C A+ Continues to develop into a true #1 C. Ended up having to play with horrible linemates and taking almost no offensive draws in the last 1/3rd of the season, simply because he was the only one who could be trusted. One of our best PPers and PKers in limited time. Just amazing. Sad he had to be utilized in the way he was because the rest of our team sucks.
Michael Ryder RW A Can't ask for more than 30+ Goals. While he had off games, they were significantly more rare than Boston fans warned us of. I didn't really notice him floating until the last 2 games of the season, when the playoffs were out of reach.

Grade "B" Ratings
Player Position Grade Reasoning
Loui Eriksson LW/RW B+ I love Loui, but he seemed streakier this year. This is the second year in a row he's had a very invisible Jan/Feb. Last year it was illness, idk this year. Also faded down the stretch. Maybe carrying Rib's line to play defensive wore him down.
Phillip Larsen D B Performed quite well in his rookie season. Had a rough midseason where he regressed a bit, but bounced back. Still learning and developing quite well. His offensive game will develop with time.
Trevor Daley D B Probably our best overall D this year. He'll never be a 30+ point guy like we once though, but continues to develop quite well. He gets better every year.
Richard Bachman G B+ Was great given the circumstances he faced. Very confident with him in net. Nice to have a reliable backup again.

Grade C Ratings
Player Position Grade Reasoning
Tomas Vincour RW C+ He has all the tools, and produced well when put on Benn's wing. Still only 21, I hold out hope he could be a 2nd line winger. If not, his defensive and possession skills are very refreshing for a 3rd line player.
Alex Goligoski D C+ I didn't think he was as bad defensively as people made him out to be. He gets crammed on the boards in his own zone a lot, but he spends a lot less time in his own zone, so it balances out a bit. Our transition game was seriously lost without him back in November. He looked really good with Fistric, but the coaching staff put him with Larsen/Robidas and he couldn't play to his strength. Still was our only 30 point D-man despite the horrible season.
Ryan Garbutt W C Gave the team a nice shot in the arm when he came up, can crash and bang well and get garbage goals. Can't say that about most of our 4th line.
Eric Nystrom F C Gets a high grade because of his on fire first half. But the second half of the season showed why he he's a great 4th liner, but not really an ideal 3rd liner. Questionable defense, no playmaking ability at all, etc.
Steve Ott W C Was put in a situation he didn't belong in, expected to do things he's not meant to do at. Part of that is a coaching staff and roster issue. He'd be a great 3rd line agitator and FO specialist, but had to play top 6. He was below average in that role, but an OK stopgap for a throw away season. His penalty drawn/taken differential is trash, and is another huge reason he needs to go back to being a role player next year.
Mark Fistric D C Wasn't as good defensively as people would like to believe. Still performed pretty well given his inconsistency in the lineup, and the role he was given.
Mike Ribeiro C C- His points total prevents me from ranking him lower. I honestly think when he's off his game he hurts our team a lot. No matter his linemates he was a huge defensive liability, and all season he couldn't be trusted to take faceoffs. Early in the season with Morrow he was absolutely invisible, and a huge defensive liability. When given Ryder/Eriksson he had to be sheltered just to produce. I'm a bigger critic of him than most, but I think his time is up here.
Tom Wandell C/W C- Did pretty good when Benn went down, wasn't a horrible liability on the 4th line. Didn't deserve to be healthy scratched as much as he was. Needed to see more PK time.

Grade "D" Ratings
Player Position Grade Reasoning
Sheldon Souray D D+ Great beginning of the year. Below average on defensive the rest of the year. Also lost a lot of his physicality. Couldn't stay healthy. Suffers from the same syndrome as Robidas though, he wasn't as bad as the coaching staff made him due to utilizing him as a #1 D-man.
Vernon Fiddler C D+ Wasn't bad, but showed why he was a 4th line guy in Phoenix. Wasn't as great at FOs and defensively as he was supposed to be.
Adam Pardy D D Brutal early on, he improved later in the year. Wasn't as bad as people made him out to be by the end of his term. I'd still prefer Jordie as the #7 though.
Radek Dvorak RW D Was a guy. Showed some nice cycling with the 3rd line, but wasn't amazing at anything.
Adam Burish W D I give him a D just because he could win some FOs. But he was horrible defensively and was our worst PKer this year. Didn't block nearly as many shots as he did last year. Time to move on.
Jake Dowell C D Dropped the gloves when he was in the lineup and told to. But he was brought in as a guy who could take FOs and PK. He did none of that, so he was useless.
Stephane Robidas D D- I'd give him an F, but it wasn't his fault he was used as a #1 D-man when he wasn't. Horribly out of position at least 2-3 times a night. Made stupid questionable plays constantly. Took stupid penalties. Please go away.

Grade "F" Ratings
Player Position Grade Reasoning
Brenden Morrow LW F Horrible year. Took the worst penalties, and was too slow to contribute. Should have stayed on IR, but even in the beginning of the season he was horrible.
Toby Petersen F F Power play QB. Hahahaha

Regarding Fiddler, I agree he'd be a wonderful 4th line Center. Hell most of our 3rd line would be a great 4th line on a playoff team. We need a real checking line 3rd though.

Ott - Wandell - Vincour/FA
Nystrom - Fiddler - Garbutt/Sceviour

Or something like that.

I would've given Daley an A too if he had continued his scoring pace over the last third of the season or even if it had just declined modestly. But it totally dried up and vanished. He ended up not even setting a career high in points. All the same old frustrations with him as a player returned when he reverted to pelting the glass mercilessly with his shot attempts.
