Devils' lines today: Parise-Zajac-Kovalchuk; Sykora-Elias-Zubrus; Ponikarovsky-Henrique-Clarkson; Carter-Gionta-Bernier; Boulton, Janssen.
Interesting that Gionta got center over Carter.
Is little Gio a center? I know NHL 12 is nothing to go by, but I think he's listed as one there.
I really hope that Boulton and Janssen stay out of the lineup come playoff time. I'll live with little Gio on the 4th line, Florida isn't exactly an overwhelmingly physical team. Other than Barch, I can't think of any physical presence up front.
as far as i'm concerned, those line combinations tell all the story you need to hear.
Why would PDB be running lines in a practice with gionta centering the 4th line, if he was just there as a potential injury replacement for janssen? Don't you think that janssen would be rotating into that line at least if that were the case?
To me, this is clearly just to see if they like how Gionta practices with Bernier and Carter, without having to 'officially' call up Gionta.

I agree with the sentiment that Pete knows they need someone who can play more than 5 minutes a game if they have little Gio practicing at center. Makes a lot of sense.
“Those aren’t guys you’re going to rely on to score, but they’re the supporting cast who do things that don’t show up on the scoresheet: blocking shots,” Kowalsky said of contributions from his veteran players. “They’ve been good on our penalty kill and important faceoffs. When we’re up by a goal late in the game. It’s things like that.
“They’re guys who should be easy to play with and make guys around them better. If they’re scoring and creating chances, it’s going to be more from hard work and not tic-tac-toe plays.”
Gionta recognizes the responsibilities he shares with the older players on the team.
“We’ve had guys stepping up all year,” he said. “Every night, you need a full-team effort. As one of the leaders, I try to push the guys to do that. Hopefully, they respond. We have over the last few games, and we have to keep going down the stretch here.”
Gionta’s performance against the Bruins was just one example of seasoned players producing at the right time. Sestito leads the team with four game-winning goals and Mills has nine points in the last 10 games.
