Ding ding ding! This is what 99% of people use it for. It's like a dating-aid/stalking tool.

As someone who has had problems with another person before, that is just another reason why I don't have a legit account. I may be a bit overly sensitive when it comes to having a personal photo online, but it's for a good reason. I only posted that one of me as a kid on here, because you couldn't see much with it.

Nice avvy Fel, although it keeps reminding me of the what-part-of-the-game-shouldn't-be-mentioned thing.

Not necessarily. Just a lot of crazy freaks out there. Come to think of it, there are TWO people from my past that are reason enough not to have a legit FB page. One guy from school stalked and sexually harassed me for years. And this kid was a major outcast....something was way off with him. We're talking about psycho, ready to snap type of person. He was so off his rocker with me that two of my male friends (who usually tried to act tough and hated authority in school) literally ran to the nearest adult in charge to pass on a creepy message that the lunatic told them. Still makes my hair stand up on the back of my neck thinking about how much he terrorized me. The last thing I would need is for him to find me on FB or anywhere for that matter.

Sorry, I was just trying to bring light to what I assumed was a rather dark situation. No harm was meant. My apologies.

We understood you were trying to make light of the situation. At the same time it was like, "Yep, that's the type of comment that makes people want to cancel Facebook."

From "my" experience, it always seems to be the good looking gals that get stalkers.

Won't disagree with ya there. But you want to hear the crazy part. This kid starting stalking me in the 2nd grade. We were 8 #@$!ing years old. I wasn't good looking. I was missing my front teeth.

Plus, it gives you a couple more days to get out of town when someone's trying to find you and tell you their pregnant. Kinda nice actually.

Ha, add another person who doesn't do FB. I have an account (a real one), I just don't go there, it feels so... 'bleh'. All my friends (real friends, not FB friends) know that they should text me if they post something of interest to me (event invitation, etc.)

Agreed. I have one. My mom has about three times as many friends as me. If I cared, that would put me in a serious depression.

I really don't see why people are so proud about avoiding it. It's a nice way to stay in touch with people you seldom see. It's not a replacement for actual human social interaction. I would not have met my girlfriend if not for Facebook. Serves a nice purpose.

I had something similar written up, but apparently didn't post.

I don't really see why it's some sort of achievement (outside of the middle/high school "oh look how different I am") to not use Facebook. It's a tool. Either you use it or you don't.

FB is useful imo. I don't spend alot of time there, most of my updates are trolls or "I'm gay oh dog my friends found my Facebook open once again while drinking at my flat" -update. Atleast most of you have legit reasons not to use FB, I smile in the inside when someone is acting all high and mighty "I don't use Facebook because its privacy standards". Well might I enlighten you, that your personal credentials aren't that much of a rarity anyways and can be found in tens if not hundreds of databases already and 30% of those are easily crackable, 10% of them contain very very sensitive information of you (including your ISP's browsing history that are kept for 2-years, atleast here in finland). That knowledge doesn't stop me looking at porn tho, it would if I were into something illegal, but I'm not so. And there are proxies for that. Now I won't guarantee the ISP part is entirely true, but I heard it from an educated person whose expertise I believe in.

I guess I just don't see a use for Facebook. Especially when the gal has her's, I don't need one; especially considering I haven't had it this long. All of our pictures would be on her account if anyone I know would want to see them. And beyond that, I find everything else on a waste of time. Lets be honest, the only real reason anyone looks at Facebook is to see pictures of where people went/what they were doing...

I still keep in contact with who I've wanted to keep in touch with. Outside of that, I'm not really looking to keep up with anyone else as there's likely a reason I stopped talking with them. I've had the same cell phone number for nearly 15 years, so if someone wants to get a hold of me, they know how.

There are many great reasons to use Facebook to keep in touch - it's essentially a year-round Christmas letter.

Of course how you use social media changes as you get older but for me it's grown from a way to set up things (events, people, etc.) in college (with a lot less maturity) to what it is now. Like Jarick said, social media shouldn't be a replacement for human social interaction - there are other issues if that's the case - but another way to network and keep in touch.

well look at it this way...facebook is so easy to crack and has such a huge volume of users that casual haxors just avoid the other databases and target FB out of sheer laziness. kinda like how Mac's are more "secure" than Windows PCs because fewer viruses are written to target them.

it's personal choice. i don't really feel like catching up with anyone from my past who I don't regularly talk to and I'd rather not have those awkward "why didn't you accept my friend request yet?" moments from colleagues whom I don't particularly like. Though to be honest i have to explain my lack of FB as often as i'd have to do that..."I tried to find you on FB..."

Once you are in your late 20's/early 30's a lot of your friends from college (and I guess high school if you kept in touch) all have kids and families and you rarely see them. Outside of a few close friends and of course your family. And then there's extended family.

It's nice because my grandparents who are getting up there and only see my kid a few times a year get to see pictures of him every week. Same with my extended family.

This is such a brutal misconception. No one "hacks Facebook." The same goes for most any major website. The Gawker hack last year was pretty much the only major website database hack that has happened in the past 5 years. The only thing that gets "hacked" on Facebook are idiots leaving themselves logged in on a public computer, or the occasional weak security password that can be brute forced. Once in a while there's issues with reused passwords on minor forums (HF would be an example) that have a security breach (see Xbox Live security breach from the past 6 months).

you're so brutally counter-counter culture. the point is facebook is huge and easy to exploit (whether from intrinsic security flaws or the idiocy of the common user). it may not be real hacks but it could end up netting the same info.
