Yep - have to route for FLA. In order to get by Washington, we just have to get 1 more point than they do. That could be 4 points for BUF and 3 for WSH, or 3-2, 2-1 or even 1-0, and it doesn't matter what Florida does. That leaves many different scenarios where we could succeed.
On the other hand, the only way we get past Florida is BUF goes 2-0-0, WSH goes 2-0-0 and FLA goes 0-2-0. That's only 1 winning scenario with 3 teams involved. That's extremely unlikely.
Well actually Washington could lose their final game.
But the Sabres can't do any better than 8th regardless. So might as well cheer for the outcome that gives a greater chance of making it to 8th. A Washington win leaves no room for error, a Florida win leaves a very tiny room for error, but a room nevertheless.
1) Buffalo wins and Florida wins in regulation.
2) Buffalo wins and Florida wins in overtime/shootout.
3) Buffalo OTL and Florida wins in regulation.
4) Buffalo wins and Washington wins in regulation.
5) Buffalo wins and Washington wins in overtime/shootout.
6) Buffalo OTL and Florida wins in overtime/shootout.
7) Buffalo regulation loss and Florida regulation win.
8) Buffalo OTL and Washington win.
9) Buffalo regulation loss and Florida overtime/shootout win.
10) any other scenario eliminates the Sabres from playoff contention.
Scenarios 1-3 give Buffalo control of their destiny heading into Saturday, so those are the best.
Scenario 4 leaves the Sabres needing outside help, but offers more paths into the playoffs, leaving both Washington and Florida catchable.
Scenarios 5-9 leave Florida uncatchable and Buffalo needing help from the Washington-Ranger game.

Reason: Forgot one scenario
1) Buffalo wins and Florida wins in regulation.
2) Buffalo wins and Florida wins in overtime/shootout.
3) Buffalo OTL and Florida wins in regulation.
4) Buffalo wins and Washington wins in regulation.
5) Buffalo wins and Washington wins in overtime/shootout.
6) Buffalo OTL and Florida wins in overtime/shootout.
7) Buffalo regulation loss and Florida regulation win.
8) Buffalo regulation loss and Florida overtime/shootout win.
9) any other scenario eliminates the Sabres from playoff contention.

Scenario 4 leaves the Sabres needing outside help, but offers more paths into the playoffs, leaving both Washington and Florida catchable.
Scenarios 5-8 leave Florida uncatchable and Buffalo needing help from the Washington-Ranger game.
And to clarify for those who want it, scenario 2 and 3 are different in name only, they have the exact same outcome and as such are equal in order of preference (outside of the fact that a win is better than a loss for our psyches).
Easy, FLA. We have no hope of catching them, the caps are our only concern.
I'd rather discuss the game itself. I think FLA is really going to come after the caps, and I think they have better goal-tending. Ovie has cold off a little, so this could be another loss for the caps. I'm really hoping it is.
Doesn't matter if we can't beat a really good Flyers team.
I think some are having this debate over on Boston's board. Play your top players and beat them at their place to send a message prior to the series, or rest your guys to avoid malicious hits/injury and then start ramping up for the playoffs against Buffalo.
It's a tough call. Personally I go with playing regulars, unless they could use a night off.
Sabres regulation win with Florida regulation win just seems best for me. I want us to control our destiny.
Aye, this second chance is a blessing. They must approach Thursdays game as a Game 7. Go all out, absolutely empty the tank and do not let up. Do they want to feel the sting of having their season ended by the same team as last year?! The better not. Because the Cryers will be more than happy to do that to them.
Our best chance to get in is if we win out. If we win out, and Florida doesn't get any points we get in. Of course team troll will not let that happen.
Scenario # 3&4 also clinch with a Buf OT loss against Boston and a Washington regulation loss.
Here are the OT loss scenarios
1) Buf OT loss, FLA reg win--Buf clinches with a win, a Caps regulation loss, or an OT loss and a Caps loss of any kind.
2) Buf OT loss, FLA OT win--Buf clinches with a win AND a Caps loss, or a OT loss AND a Caps regulation loss
3) Buf OT loss, Washington win (reg or OT)--Buf clinches with a win AND a Caps regulation loss
Florida clinches with a Buffalo OT loss regardless
Now for the loss:
1) Buf regulation loss, FLA regulation win--Buf clinches with a win and a Caps loss, or a OT loss and a Caps regulation loss
2) Buf regulation loss, FLA OT win--Buf clinches with a win AND a Caps regulation loss
3) Buf regulation loss, Caps win (regulation or OT)--Buf eliminated
thx that are exactly the kind of answers i was loking for. now, what seemed logical anyways, is underlined. let's hope florida rolls over the caps!
Details of NBC's complete coverage of the playoffs are starting to come out:
Quote:
NBC, the NBC Sports Network, CNBC and the NHL Network will bring as many as 105 Stanley Cup Playoff games (approximately 262 hours of coverage) during 2012 chase for Lord Stanley’s Cup. NBCSports.com and Comcast Sportsnet will also assist in coverage online and on a local level, with numerous exclusive features. The networks will also use numerous social media tools to bring fans closer to the game.
“The NBC Sports Group is proud to employ all of its assets – broadcast, cable, regional and digital – to surround the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and provide fans and viewers with more live-event and news coverage than any previous post-season in NHL history,” said Mark Lazarus, Chairman, NBC Sports Group.
Starting next Wednesday, April 11th, all four networks will televise the Conference Quarterfinal round. NHL Live will air every night, beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET, and NHL Post-Game will wrap things up when all action is done. NBC hops on for exclusive coverage April 14th, 15th, 21st and 22nd, with doubleheaders on the 15th and 22nd. All other games are subject to local blackouts, though in recent years, some markets have bypassed local coverage here and there and allowed then-VERSUS to go exclusively in that market.
Exclusivity will begin starting with the Conference Semifinals. In the past, VERSUS was only allowed two games per second round series. Starting this year, NBC, NBC Sports Network, CNBC and NHL Network (to a lesser extent than in Round 1) have exclusive coverage of the entire second round. NBC will be on the air April 28-29 and May 5-6.
NBC Sports Network will air all but two games of the Conference Finals, with NBC televising a game from each series on May 19th and 12th. NBCSN’s coverage will be exclusive. The Stanley Cup Final will go by the same broadcast format as in years past, with NBC televising games one and two, and 5-7 if necessary. NBC Sports Network will air games three and four.
so basically having Gamecenter Live is meaningless after Saturday?
I'd think so.
Have you been able to use GCL for nationally televised playoff games before?
Some games will be streaming, though:
Quote:
NBCSports.com will provide online coverage. it will include “second screen” online streaming of every game on NBC, with a companion screen that provides live, in game highlights, “Star Cams”, chats with ProHockeyTalk, and a “Spotlight Cam”, that provides a look from above center ice.
I assume that when they say "every game on NBC" they mean just the games that are actually broadcast on the main NBC channel.

To my knowledge both of you are correct:
1) If you have GCL, you either necessarily live outside the regional area of your team or just like watching random games. In either event, if you're not local you'll have the game on one of the four advertised stations. Either the local broadcast (if your team gets in and plays BUF) would preempt the national if they want, and you'd be blacked out, or they'd carry it on one of the national stations. And you'd be blacked out. You might even get screwed if you don't have NHLNet.
2) Agreed. NBC is over the air, so anyone with just rabbit ears or a TV tuner can watch. So give content there away for free (streaming) because anyone can just grab it OTA anyway. Boosts your viewership and add $$$, and you can feature your sponsored cameras or whatever. The other games on NBCSN, CNBC, and NHLNet are all paid cable. Can't give free streaming for those or your giving pay-exclusive content out for free.
Either way, I feel like CNBC will be the butt of the new "Outdoor Life Network" type of jokes, but either way, we went from local TV primarily in the early post-lockout days to multiple nationally televised games per week, and some exposure for playoffs to every single game on TV for many.
I thought that GCL was supposed to carry the first two rounds of the playoffs this year, minus the nationally televised games, of course. I could be wrong on that though.

GCL is great for me because I live in Michigan -- but any game that is nationally broadcast, whether on NHLN, NBC Sports Network, etc is blacked out. When the Sabres play in Detroit I have to watch it on FSN Detroit as well, because the GCL feed is blacked out (as it is for all Wings games).
Great if you don't live near your team and/or you enjoy watching other random games.
That's the point though, under the new TV contract just about every game is on national TV. The rare round 1 games that arent in theory should be available on GCL.

Yep, seems a lot less will be available. I just hope none of the games are on NBC itself. I only get NBC Sports and NHLN because I don't get local channels...
