This unique and stirring viewpoint definitely needed a new thread. Props to the OP.

I don't think so.

Adding a rookie to our defence isn't going to take us from one of the worst defences in the league to the playoffs, especially when the goaltending is still suspect.

You need to find someone with a problem. You won't get something perfect, but you could get a guy like Nash if you add to gagner. The problem is that I don't want Nash here because of a terrible contract.

there needs to be a demand like that. We can only hope that some team wants Gagner as bad as Ottawa wanted Turris.

He still has value, just not to every team in the league.

The Kings for example probably wouldnt offer anything of value for him where as the Islanders might.

The point is that 22 y/o players with potential to score points and are high draft picks have pretty good trade value.

there needs to be demand. Unfortunately if there is a guy who is equal to Gagner but better on faceoffs, or better defensively, or more physical teams would prefer him.

I agree with you, trade value depends on demand. Gagner to the Leafs wouldn't get us much, but to a team desperate for secondary scoring he has much more value.

Does anyone know which players would have to clear waivers next year? The ones I'm looking at specifically are Petrell, Hartikainen, Vande Velde, Fedun, Plante, Paajarvi, Lander, and Teubert.

Petrell- Exempt (1 year)
Hartikainen- Exempt (2 years/131 games)
Vande Velde- Exempt (1 year/53 games)
Fedun- Exempt (3 years/60 games)
Plante- Exempt (1 year)
Paajarvi- Exempt (1 year/39 games)
Lander- Exempt (3 years/104 games)
Teubert- Exempt (2 years/136 games)

It's years or games played, whichever is reached first. In Petrell and Plante's cases, their available GP exceeds the number of years.

Whats the deal with Justin Schultz? Are we front runners in his sweepstakes?

I can see a team like Anaheim looking at Gagner, but i'm not sure they would give up the first or any of their top prospects, they got some good ones too.
Etem(no chance)
Palmieri
Gibson
Friberg
Rakell

Well really are no sweepstakes yet. UFA June 1st no team can talk to him till then. So no front runners as of today.

I would add to Gagner, I'm not sure what they would want. Their offence is abysmal, so maybe Jones and Gagner?

Hall RNH Eberle
Hemsky Grigorinko Clowe
Hartikainen Belanger Petrell
Smyth Horcoff Jones
Eager TBA

Petry Smid
Whitney N. Schultz
J. Schultz Sutton
Potter/Peckham/TBA

Dubnyk
TBA

Healthy, that's a playoff bound team

I like this and think it is very possible...

MP plus for Clowe
Gagner 2012 2nd rd plus for additional top 10 pick (maybe dreaming with value tho...) However Grigs / Reinhart or Trouba or Dumba if he goes the Fowler route

Also sign Hordi and inject him when needed

Tyler Myers
Luke Adam

for

2nd Overall
Sam Gagner

?

I think that is a fair deal and I would take it. Imagine if we also signed Justin Schultz.

Smid - Myers
Schultz - Petry
Whitney - J Schultz

Well they got Etem coming up so a second line like Ryan - Gagner - Etem could be pretty damn good.
