could anyone give their opinions of frenchies, slimz, memphis blues and beaver & mullet. thanks.
I just wanted to throw in my two bits on Beaver & Mullet. I live in the West End and this is definitely my favorite place to go for dinner or brunch. You can customize your own grilled cheese sandwich or macaroni and cheese with a ton of different options, get a burger, flatbread, all the regular stuff. They try to keep everything as local as possible and have a good selection of beer on tap.
If you can go there on the weekend for brunch, get the breakfast poutine. It's unreal.

I liked frenchies but the service at the old Hastings location was terrible, and I thought it was horribly overpriced. The food was good, though. I remember the poutine being good but I wasn't blown away.
Memphis Blues is great but I caution you to only go to the Broadway location. It's tiny and cramped but they do things right there. I was super disappointed when I went to the Commercial drive joint - my favourite thing, the brisket was actually dry there. I've never been disappointed going to Broadway, except maybe going in and it being full. Also, I'm not a fan of their chicken, I think it's really dry (actually I've found this for 'bbq style' chicken in general in Canada).
yup, La Taqueria takes deliciousness to a whole new level.
Olympia is a good bet. Noodle Box too. The Naam is a bit of an experience but the food is a little hit and miss. Otherwise the food scene is a little bland in Kits. Actually, Kits is a little bland now too.
I have had a different experience with La Belle Patate on Davie is probably the most authentic according to friends from Montreal... and excellent smoked meat sandwiches.
A little off the wall pick is Brado Pizza 1399 Commercial Drive also has shawarma and falafel but excellent poutine - maybe 1A.
I've heard good things from friends from Montreal about the poutine at the Oakwood, though I haven't tried it myself. It's not the traditional stuff though.
Their poutine and their burger are both the best i have had in vancouver (and I have tried most of the places recommended). They truly are incredible.
I really don't understand the hype with la belle patate..
Maybe I got to go again.
I went to Frenchies and had their pulled pork poutine. Enjoyed it, but it was pretty pricey, $16 with a drink and a regular sized poutine. It came with lightly sauteed onions which gave the gravy a great crunch to it. Didn't feel 'gross' either after finishing it. Which uually happens when I eat something that greasy.
A good tip for the frugal eater, if you're talking about eating out in Vancouver and want to try new places check out www.groupon.com. You pay via credit card and there's always deals to restaurants on there where it's pay $5/$10 up front and get $10/$20 at the restaurant. It varies from day to day especially under the "Now! Deals" section which have to be used on the same day, but if you want to eat out there's always something there that will get your roughly half off so it's a good place to keep an eye on.
And while it wasn't my initial intention I guess I shouldn't mention this without plugging in my referral link as well for anyone who wants to sign up!
