If I had to choose between Gaustad or Jerrod Smithson, I would pick Gaustad even w/ his poor offense skills. Smithson just scared me whenever he was on the ice, especially in our end of the ice. Gaustad even though still lacking in defense doesn't look as scary defensively like Smithson did, who seemed like would get manhandled by the other team and couldn't clear the puck out of our end. Plus Gaustad is better to look at too
@101 ... sometimes you seem to beat the same dead horse alot with your stance. put others down or make posters seem "irrational" because it doesn't follow the "facts". please just try to respect others side a bit more.
I gave poile two thumbs up for the trade deadline. he did great and he is not "in a cant win" situation when it comes to how I view him.
fact is no other team gave up a 1st for him.. even it was late. we overpayed and there is no question. I would just have liked to kept the 1st, thats all. I felt ak and gill were enough.. but as someone else said.. who knows, poile may strike gold with a 7th.. he is known for that kind of thing

Sorry, but I was a bit busy typing when you posted your reply giving Poile credit and felt letting my dog out to relieve himself before the game took priority over reading your post and editing mine or replying sooner.
Few teams were buying and we had the need for a player with Gaustad's skillset. Without the seconds this year or next, a first was the only way to get him. Poile got AK relatively cheap, paid too much for Gaustad .. in the end it all balanced out. Goose is our one center with size .. the one relatively consistent guy at the dot (he was 46% one game of late ... 80% another, usually around 60%).
@101 I agree it all "balanced out" in terms of value. but I also don't think we were in such a need to add 3 significant pieces. I thought our team was pretty solid to begin with... and that doesn't count radulov.. I wonder if poile would change his deadline deals if he knew rads was coming back 100%

He probably does ... but Radulov wasn't a 100% done deal until he got off the plane. The Smithson trade was a precursor to needing a guy like Goose. Neither Wilson nor Smith is as defensively responsible, good at using their size to disrupt a cycle, or effective at the dot as Goose. Goose can play the 3rd or 4th line ... not exactly an option Smithers realistically gave us (and this coming from a guy who owns a Smithson jersey). AK became our forward acquisition in lieu of Radulov. Bringing in both AK and Radulov doomed Wilson unless he was making it impossible to sit him with his play ... and he didn't do that. There's just too many talented guys for the top 9 wings and not enough slots to play them all.
