Jagr and Selanne. I think Bure > Selanne but he didn't play nearly as long.

Jagr at his best was better than EVERYONE. Ovechkin at his best was/is better than Selanne's best, better than Bure's best, and better than Kurri's best. So, Jagr and Ovechkin for me.

yeah 65 goals > 76 goals.

I don't think Teemu at his best is noticeably worse or better... than Ovi at his best. Ovi wouldn't have won any major trophies either... if he was also playing in the same league as Jagr and Lemieux in their primes.

Teemu was never as physical as Ovie. I'd say they're both equally as good at scoring goals... about equal in terms of playmaking... while Teemu is the better skater.

They're easily the two best wingers to ever wear the #8.

also, if not for Teemu's near career ending/ freak injury in his second season, he'd likely have another 60+ goal/100+ point season, and would have been an even faster skater / more agile skater in his time with the Ducks.

All this being said, Ovi definitely has a good opportunity at distancing himself from Selanne to be seen as the second best European winger... don't think he has much of a shot as distancing himself from Jagr though.

Ovi's slump with no disclosed reason (yet) sure isn't helping his case. That being said, I wish Ovi the best, and would be happy to see him distance himself from Selanne, to be seen as the better winger.

NHL.com calling Ovechkin the best player to ever wear the #8 last year... was a bit premature, imo. Especially when Teemu had an equally impressive season to Ovi last year, at age 40.

When Ovechkin potted 65, the next closest (Kovalchuk) scored 52.

When Teemu scored 76, so did Mogilny.

Jagr is first by far, obviously. After that it gets a bit more hazy, but I went with Teemu.

Jagr easily, then Selanne by a little bit over Kurri. Ovechkin has the potential to take one of the top two spots if he gets back to being a dominating player.

at the present moment, that's for sure.

Selanne should get the edge though, yeah. 2, 60+ assist seasons, one where he had 68 assists. Ovi has had a lot of 50+ assist seasons too, his max is 59 so far.

next closest was Mario Lemieux with 69 (in 60 games)

then Robitaille with 63 in 84 games.

not all that different. 76 is 76.

76 in 92-93, where gpg was 7.25 does not equal 76 on 07-08 where the gpg was 5.57. There is a reason Selanne never came anywhere near 76 again in his career. Ovechkin in his prime was clearly more dominant then Selanne was at any point in his career.

Looking at European wingers that played in the NHL (I guess excluding Kharlamov and with Jagr obviously being #1) simply by who played at the highest level, I would take Ovechkin over Selanne.

Career wise it isn't a fair poll because Selanne is 41 while Ovi is still in his mid-20s. BTW, if Bure is up there, then Kovy at least deserves to be an option.

Ovechkin's adjusted total = 87

So yeah, Ovi's 65 >> Selanne's 76

76 is 76 but when you take into consideration the era and gpg, 65>76.

Why? Bure's peak is certainly better then Kovys, Kovy is known as a goal scorer and Bure puts him to shame in that department with 5 50 goal seasons and 2 60 goal seasons, along with some pretty good playoff number.

Ovechkin's physical game >>>>>>>>> Selanne

Oft overlooked in these types of polls is that hockey is a violent physical game and that is a critical component of a player's repitoire.

Ovechkin and Jagr are easily the best two European wingers ever.
