Do we need a new coach?

Brent Sutter had three years to try to get the Flames into the playoff and has failed. Do you think we need a new coach?

I certainly do but I will wait until the playoff are over and we know which coaches are let go to make my pick. I know Pat Quinn still wants to coach, Ron Wilson was just fired. Before Brent Sutter was hired I wanted Dave Tippet to be our coach. Who should be our new coach or should we just keep Sutter.

None of those coaches. If Quinn or Wilson comes in, I will slit my wrists and **** my pants.

I would like to see Jon Cooper as the coach he coaches Norfolk Admirals in the ahl. I am tired of recycling coaches who didn't work else where I think we need a new coach who is ready for the new style of the new nhl.

I agree.

I forget who brought him up in the first place, but I really like the idea of atleast entertaining the notion of hiring Bob Boughner is some capacity.

As funny as it may sound, I want a coach that has very little experience at the NHL level.

I like Troy Ward and Bob Boughner a lot, and feel they could make a good pairing at the NHL level.

No I really like Brett Sutter. What we do need however, is a new GM. Has anyone heard of that Jarmo Kekalainen fellow? He's been garnering a lot of attention lately...

What would a new GM do that Feaster has not?

haha very good point. I don't know. I just have a feeling Feaster's going to try to "retool" again next season. I want a guy whose really good with young guys and wants to rebuild. Apparently this guy was one of the world's top amateur scouts? I don't really know much about him though so I might be completely wrong.

Feaster has brought in several new scouts and so far has appeared to drafted well. Also when the owners don't allow you to rebuild what else can you do but retool? Him being a former top scout doesn't do much as he would be in Calgary for the majority of his time with the team he would do little scouting himself.

I would like an offensive minded coach. If we keep the same players, their trade value will go up with numbers, leaving us with options at the next deadline.

I'd like to see someone new. If I had to pick someone, it would be Kurt Kleinendorst who coaches the AHL affiliate for Ottawa. Nothing but rave reviews of him.

You are right on the money. Feaster so far is doing well as GM it is the Ownership that is making hard for the Flames to be competitive.
The ownership sees how the Oilers are doing and think if they try doing some retooling like they have the Flames will tank every year. That is the wrong type of thinking we need to do some drastic changes. Not major changes but start somewhere so that for years to come we can create a competitive team that people fear to play.

My opinion is next season 2012/13 we can use it to retool and tell the fans that the team is going to doing lots of changes and hope that it can work. If I was GM I would keep veterans like Iginla, Tanguay, Cammalleri, Jokinen, Glencross, Jay-Bo, Girodano and Kipper. Then decide whether or not rehire Sutter or find a new coach. If I find a new coach I will work with him to understand the type of coach he is and try to build a team that he can coach. We have some young players on the team see which players I feel will help the team long term and keep them on the team send some to our affiliate team and the rest trade. Then everyone else on the team not UFA I will let the 29 other teams know they are on the trading block and if I get good compensation I will trade them. I will not trade any picks but I would not mind having some more picks.

With all this said I would like to have a new coach as I feel Sutter who I believe was allowed to give his opinion on the team and players still could not help the team make the playoffs so some fresh blood is what I think we need to help us make the playoffs. What most of the posters in this thread has said I believe your right we need someone who is new to coaching the NHL and who has fresh ideas.

I say keep Brent Sutter. Just need the players to buy in and get a little bit for creativity and tatlent in our roster.
And if all else still fails let him attempt to dig his way out of this mess.

People keep saying this but if you don't have the players for your system change the ****ing system. No coach should only have one system you must be flexible to maximize your roster.

Yes we need a new coach. My choices in no particular order are:
  • Bob Boughner
  • Joe Mullen
  • Peter Horachek

Very simple, yes we need a new coach, we need a coach that will use systems that cater to the new NHL

How do know that he hasn't tried to change the system behind the scenes? I'm sure he's made changes thoughout the season to try and make things work. Hes been a coach long enough to know when things arent working. I believe it's not entirely his fault the players don't buy in, the responsibility also lies upon the players. The roster needs more creativity, talent, and hard nosed work ethic. The organization can't keep going through coaches.

I'd be very surprised if Sutter gets an extension. This offseason is when Feaster gets to really make his mark and you'd imagine that includes bringing in "his" head coach. As to who that might be, who knows.

Scott Arniel is currently unemployed. Is his NHL record terrible because he's a terrible coach or because he was in Columbus? I honestly have no idea. People seemed to think quite highly of him when he first signed in Columbus.

The biggest problem this team has had this season is holding leads, the primary reason is in the 3rd the shifts get reduced and we dump it in and change that is 100% coaching. Sutter has tried unsuccessfully to use Jbow as a shut down defenseman and to use him on the point on the power play to things he is not, he should be joining the rush and should be in the center of the box on the pp like he was in Florida when he was successful. These 2 things are both on Sutter and his coaching staff and I believe it should lead to his removal as head coach. I agree players have to buy into a system but the system clearly isn't working late in games so why continue to force it. / end rant

If sutter doesnt get fired i would be shocked. Jim playfair got fired after one season and he took this team to the playoffs. Mike keenan fired after two seasons where he led this team to the playoffs. Brent sutter after 3 straight seasons without making the playoffs should be fired.

Nah, I'd still rather see him get fired. We'll let some fan coach the last game for a promotional thing. That would be way more fun to watch.

Yeah lol. Well I'd like to see some kid coach them. It would be funny to see Sarich taking faceoffs, Cammy playing defense, and Moss playing goalie. That would be entertaining hockey!
