Greater Goal Scorer? (Stamkos vs. Ovechkin)

Stamkos is still young and may not even be in his prime but with a 2nd Richard, that's the same number as Ovechkin.

This is an interesting comparison, it's on shooting percentage:

Stamkos' Top 3
20.2
17.2
16.5

Ovechkin's Top 3
14.6
13.6
12.2

Thoughts?

Stamkos is alot more versatile. Ovechkin is good at what he does but simply doesn't have as many tricks in the bag as Stamkos does. Stamkos can score in so many different ways.

Now he can, his game has evolved since his 51 goal season.

Ovechkin has done the opposite, he was completely unpredictable in his first couple seasons and slowly turned into a one trick pony.

At the top of their games it at least equal or Ovy's favor atm.

EDIT: OP asked 2 different questions, I believe Ovy 05-09 was the greater goal scorer however the poll asks who's more efficient, and with that I'd go with Stamkos.

In prime its Ovi AINEC

2 Harts, 2 Richards, 3 Lindsays, 65 goals + 56 goals, 1 Art Ross.

Stamkos might become a better scorer, but as of now Ovi most easily has him beat.

Can't hold Stamkos' playoff-less team against him.

Remember how Ovechkin was questionable for the Hart based on if the Capitals would make playoffs?

And we're talking about goal scoring. Stamkos and Ovechkin have two Richards.

Stamkos career averages so far is 44.2 a year, including his rookie 23 goals bringing that average down.

Ovechkin is now at 48.1

The scariest thing about Stamkos is the fact that he's still only 22 years old. It's just incredible.

This is Stamkos' 4th season so to be fair let's use both player's first 4 seasons.

Ovi
Rocket Richard: 2
Goals: 219
Top finishes in goals: 1, 1, 3, 4

Stamkos
Rocket Richard: 2
Goals: 177
Top finishes in goals: 1, 1, 2, 85

Best seasons statistically (goals only)
1. Ovechkin - 2007-08 - 65 goals
2. Stamkos - 2011-12 - 58 goals
3. Ovechkin - 2008-09 - 56 goals
4. Ovechkin - 2005-06 - 52 goals
5. Stamkos - 2009-10 - 51 goals
6. Ovechkin - 2006-07 - 46 goals
7. Stamkos - 2010-11 - 45 goals
8. Stamkos - 2008-09 - 23 goals

In both absolute goals and in relation to peers Ovi has had a more dominant first four years. Stammer is playing great, but he's not quite the goal scorer Ovi was.

Also, if we're talking playoffs then its even further apart. Ovi led his team to the playoffs. He managed 11 goals in 14 games (year the Caps went past first round). Stamkos managed 6 goals in 18 games (year the Lightning went past first round).

From their body of work to date, I'd easily take Stamkos. Stamkos is young and steadily improving while I see the opposite in Ovechkin's game. The shooting percentage would also suggest that Stamkos is and always has been a more efficient goal scorer than Ovechkin.

You can't argue with success and Ovechkin has certainly had plenty individual success in his career but if you're going to do a head to head comparison with him against any other player in the league, I think it's only fair to look at circumstance. Ovechkin came into the league as a 20 year old with about 150 games of professional hockey experience. Stamkos was drafted from junior hockey and as an 18 year old began his NHL career. If you take Ovechkin's best years and consider that his prime, then clearly Ovechkin has an obvious advantage here. I made my decision based on who I'd rather have on my team. I'd take Stamkos every time.

Agreed.

Stamkos might end up being the better goal scorer, but throughout their careers so far Ovechkin has him beat.

Can we even say that Stamkos is in his prime yet? He's still only 22 years old compared to Ovechkin's 26.

Stamkos is better than Ovechkin right now, but he's not as good as Ovechkin was in his prime.

Voted Stammer because if you take out Stamkos' rookie year, with him being 18 and having Melrose as a coach, he's hit 45+ each year. That's pretty insane. As far as efficiency... 20% shooting percentage speaks for itself.

Career-wise Ovi is still the bees knees, but I expect Stamkos to surpass that in the future, and since I have no idea what the poll is actually asking, I decided to go homer.

What makes any of you think stamkos will have a different goal scoring trajectory than Ovi? what makes you think he stays healthy? Right now obviously hes hitting his prime and Ovi is past his but those of you saying that hes gonna end up the better goal scorer have no evidence and hes about 3 50goal seasons and one 65goal season behind. Ovi was a beast and he was the best player in the world for awhile. Stamkos is not.

Seriously I dont know how you forget so quickly. As a pens fan when Ovi had the puck I **** myself. I barley notice stamkos out there. Its a testament to how retarded this forum is that Stamkos is winning this poll. Sorry but short sighted **** like this pisses me off.

OP trying to skew the results with shooting %

its ovechkin although if this pace continues for both players it could be stamkos soon. unless this question is for right now, its a little unclear
