The trade deadline revisted. Re: "4 first rounders"
i don't know how much truth there is to this but wasn't Burke offered 4 first rounders for some of the players on our current roster? how legit was this. was this reported by Dreger?
if Burke is supposedly re-tooling / wanting to add prospects then why didn't he take these 4 first rounders?
did we need to hang on to players like Lupul, Mac, or Grabo?
does any team need to re-sign a grabovski when they have a glut of prospects who can play the 2nd line center role?
is he only claiming a re-tool because his team melted, he didn't acquire anyone to help them push for the playoffs, and his only deadline move was a lateral one (ashton for aulie)?
what do you think now that Burke is picking up the pieces?
I get how you'd want to keep grabbo and kulemin, but if someone offered a first for mac and he didn't take it that is an absolute disaster of a decision. Especially with Kadri knocking on the door.
I will say this again and again until someone acknowledges me
how do you know 1 team didn't come to Burke and say "i will you my first for any one of the players on your second line" if this is the case, that is at max 2 1st's.
No way would I want to trade any of Grabo, Kulemin or Lupul for a mid-to-late 1st, these guys are good players who we should be building around, not dealing.
MacArthur, I like him too, but I would have been fine with dealing him for a 1st. Kadri is a similar player to MacArthur, but more skilled, I think he could take MacArthur's spot in the lineup and we wouldn't really miss a beat. Mac isn't a bad player, but we could replace him pretty easily, while Grabo, Kulemin and Lupul would be much harder to replace.
This is all speculation though, pretty sure it wasn't mentioned specifically who the 1sts were offered for, who knows if anyone was even after Mac specifically?
Are you serious? Mac I understand, but grabo and lupul for a late 1st? come on dude thats real funny
we don't even know what was being offered. what team was offering a late first? maybe they wanted Lupul for a late first, a goalie prospect, and a 4th round pick. we don't know, but my point is why hang on to these guys when we are re-building? we hang on to them because we are in 13th place in the east?

They are key pieces moving forward. Not to mention, the value is incredibly ridiculous. I am pretty sure Grabo and Lupul are worth more than Kaberle, and seeing that Kaberle got late 1st, B-level prospect, 2nd rounder, I am pretty sure Grabo and Lupul would at least get the same value.

Why trade away a car for a 5% chance at winning a car?

Lupul wasn't involved. Dreger said the Leafs were offered a 1st round pick each for Mac, Grabo, Kulemin and Schenn. Mac I would have done, but not Grabo, Kulemin or Schenn. Burke gave the Leafs a chance by keeping the team intact for a playoff drive, but the team totally fell apart down the stretch.

20 goal 2nd/3rd liners don't just grown on trees....

Because they're all still young enough to be impact players and contribute when the rest of the team turns the corner.
I mean, even if it takes you guys 3 years to get your **** together (and I don't think it will take that long, unless you staunchly refuse to do something about your goaltending), Lupul will be 31, Grabovski will be 30, and Schenn will be 26. The idea is to develop young talent who can come in on cheap entry-level contracts and supplement the older guys. What's a late 1st rounder going to do for you in a garbage draft year? Keep the guys you know can play, draft someone good with your top-5 pick this year, and slide the kids into the NHL roster when THEY'RE ready, not when you need them to play pro because you traded away your team. Blow up the team now, it's only going to get worse. You need to hold onto SOME veterans while you introduce young players to your NHL roster. If you don't, you just end up like the Islanders and Bluejackets.
Although if Burke WAS offered a 1st for MacArthur (in particular), I don't see how you turn that down. Talk about buying low & selling high.

i know there's nothing burke can do now, but his first order of business at his year end address is to acknowledge his failure for sitting on the fence. his re-build starts now and i bet he wishes he took those firsts for a head start.
You do realize that most late first round picks don't work out, and the ones that do generally take about 3 - 4 years to make any measurable impact. I know around draft time that people become obsessed with 1st rounders, with all the analysts like McGuire and McKenzie pumping the tires of all the top 30 prospects. But let's try to keep some sanity here. Burke would never give up his 1st and 2nd line players for kids who may or may not be 1st and 2nd line players four years from now. I would have been fine with him giving up say MacArthur and Schenn for a couple 1st's in the 10 - 20 range, but only because these players have become somewhat expendable within the organization.
so would i. we can replace those guys no? don't we have similar people on the marlies who will play better for cheaper?
We definetly do not have anyone in the organisation to replace Grabos production. Kulie was terribad this year but he's only a year removed from 30 goals, so he still likely a 20 goal guy going forward whos still quite young. Schenn was a 5th overall who's only 22 and can still develop into a valuable shutdown guy so I don't know if giving him up for a late first who may not even make the NHL at all would be the best move. We really would have to know exactly what teams made these offers to know where the picks would likely be to assess the deals though. I would give Mac up in a heartbeat for anyones 1st.

/ a Sens fan's honest view.
how do you get worse than 13th in the East and 7 seasons with no playoffs?

So if the GM who offered it would only have given a 1st if he made the finals....per say and it falls to a 3rd round if the team doesn't...you would take a 3rd for Mac???
You don't know the conditions...you don't know anything!! I love people on here...Don't know anything about anything but would do a deal without knowing anything...all they see is a 1st.....
Disaster would have been conditional...anything other than a first outright you don't trade Mac for!!! armchair GM"S...best in Fantasy Land!!
