My question to all that don't think Oduya is worth 4 million, who do we replace him with next year at the same price or less? Please stop with the Suter(zero chance that's happening).
Bowman will say Montador. Next year I bet we see
Keith-Seabrook
Hjalmersson-Leddy
Olsen-Montador
sign 7th D
Montador will likely end up hurt again and we will be scrambling to add another defenseman like the last 2 years.
To put it simply I don't think Oduya is worth 4 mil, no matter when the deal is signed. Plus the market hasn't changed that much since 10 and seeing what similar players are making and what the Hawks will have in cap space Oduya isn't worth that.
It is totally different though. A four million defenseman with the cap at 39 is totally different from one when the cap is 65.
With the uncertainty of the new CBA, I'm hoping teams are reluctant to sign high priced FAs with the exception of Suter and Parise.
If Oduya and his agent are looking for a modest increase to his current salary I say the Hawks should give it to him. Oduya is a MUCH better player than Montador and right now he's playing MUCH better than Leddy and Hjalmarsson. Oduya gives Q the option to shelter Leddy a little (although he doesn't seem to take that option ). The simple fact is that Oduya makes the Hawks defense better which is something the team needs to address if Oduya isn't kept.
If the Hawks are worried about the cap in future years they can try to ship Montador elsewhere seeing as his contract could be considered a bargain in today's market (on the condition he is healthy).
My point exactly. Not that I wish any ill will on Monty but I'd be ok if he went on LTIR for the rest of his career with Chicago.
Come on man that's not right. Montador didn't do much, but was one of the few Hawks that looked good on the powerplay in the slot.
Montador was an ok #5-6 and did a decent job. I wouldn't want him on LTIR, but I get what you are saying! One more year with Montador and then Clendening will be ready. Olsen probably was on the same level as Montador with limited ice time. Next season Olsen will be a good option as a #6 defenseman.
Montador will be shopped in the offseason, but the concussion thing may hurt his market value. His play was ok this season.
I get wanting to have cap room but its pointless if you aren't going to use it. Almost every single contract signed when free agency opens everyone yells OVERPAYMENT!
Yep. I really don't get why people have not learnt that its not really overpayment its what the market is.
I also hate when people say player X should not get more then player Y, when player Y signed his deal like 3 years ago. Its called inflation, the only contracts you can really compare are the ones that are signed in the same year. Plus even that can be misleading depending upon how the contract is structured.
He better be re-signed. You don't give up a 2nd and a 3rd for a player you let go for nothing a few months later.
GM's that do that deserve to get fired. I can only think of 2 exceptions that would get Stan off the hook:
1) The Hawks win the Cup
2) They sign Suter instead.
If thats your standard then there are a lot of GM's about to be fired not only this year, but every year. Nashville's GM might as well start packing his stuff.

Nashville's GM is going for it...sometimes it's ok to do that. It's not like he does this every year. The Hawks threw away a 2nd rounder last year also when they let Campoli go. This is becoming a pattern here....unless of course he signs Oduya, which hopefully he will do.

Are the Wings also going for it? They traded a 1st for Kyle Quincey. Or how about Philly who gave up a 2nd and 3rd for Grossman.
Think you missed my point. This is only a problem if you let these guys go for nothing. Who says all these teams you are bringing up will not re-sign these guys?
It's simply not that black and white Savara. Bowman (and I'm a huge hater of him at times) tried to re-sign Campoli last year, guy simply wanted WAY too much money and he's had an awful season by all accounts. Not overpaying him was the right choice at the time. He must use the same logic with Oduya. If Oduya wants too much money and too much term Bowman should walk away from him.

Those guys are all going to want raises. Are those GM's then going to need to be fired for giving a guy like Grossman $3 mil or Quincey $3.5 mil?
oduya is a beast for the hawks. i would be happy if they resigned him. 4m+ kinda seems like a lot though. maybe if the cap hit was lower. and oduya>montador for sure
