Toronto Sun + Phaneuf = 2 wrongs don't make a right.

The Sun isn't worth reading.

Burke put Phaneuf into a terrible situation.

Expecting Phaneuf to play #1 d minutes, and 1st unit PP & PK with his skill set and hockey IQ, particularly after what we saw from him while he was in Calgary was a hint-and-a-half of things to come. His slide was noticeable in 08-09; but when the Flames added Bouwmeester in 09-10, it accelerated DP's slide. DP's ego & personality didn't adjust to reduced ice time, or his role within the team. This was a huge miscalculation by Burke and/or his pro scouting dept.

Burke should have been astute enough to recognize that you can't have a guy with DP's personality be the lead dog of the d, let alone the team, especially in Toronto.

Phaneuf is more suited to a #3 D, 2nd pair minutes, with 1st unit PP, and limited 2nd unit PK. And under no circumstances should he be deployed to play the right side.

Hopefully (not likely) there's interest from a club seeking experienced d-man help this off season and Burke deals DP. The cap space would be a significant benefit.

Yup.

And I'd guess that 2/3 of the 11/12 roster will not be on that 13/14 roster.

In 2013/14, I hope that our roster has the speed, skill, experience and character to compete throughout an 82 game schedule.

It's funny reading all of this.

Phaneuf is a legitimate number one defenceman as Wilson and Carlyle agree and is almost impossible to replace on the market.

Wilson & Carlyle work with what Burke provides. Phaneuf is #1 on a team that sits 26th out of 30.

Tavares is a number 1 on a team that sits 27/30
Price is a number 1 on a team that sits 28/30

Problem?

This is a ****** article.

But honestly I think phaneuf is an embarrassing representative of the leafs as captain.

He really isn't that respected around the league, and isn't that good of a player either.

I'm absolutely suspect of the actual amount of respect he gets from his teammates.

He's not the right guy for the job and his C needs to go.

No he isn't.

Tell that to a playoff team.

Phaneuf's certainly not a #1 D-man. He'd be an excellent peice to complement a true #1 dman. IMO he's our #1 out of what we have. But that doesn't warrant him as a true #1 throughout this league.

No more stupid than blaming Phaneuf for his defence mates' repeated mistakes.

You've been playing that card all season. Give it up. Phaneuf has a very low hockey IQ.

How many youtube clips should I post this time? 6? 10?

Pick your number, I'll show ye a blunder.

No problem.

But I'd find it very amusing if you were trying to imply that Phaneuf is to defencemen what Price is to goalies and Tavares is to forwards, more specifically, elite or franchise type players.

Probably the only post in the whole thread that has any merit or truth other than the article that the thread is based on.

Phaneuf is the #1 D

Bozak is the #1 C

Gustavsson is the #1 Goalie

Are there any more reasons required to know why the Leafs are horrible?

The Canadiens were in the ECF 2 years ago, the leafs haven't been in the playoffs for 7, we're in no position to be taking shots at the Habs at this point in time

Heaven forbid that I should write something negative about the Canadiens.

My most sincere apologies for offending you, I thought that this was the Leafs' group.

You can say a lot of things about the Canadiens, but I just don't think you should use an argument like that. We both know that we'd kill for a ECF birth.

Anyways back on topic. Phaneuf is what he is, a good OFD, with some defensive deficiencies. Pair him with Suter and watch him become more well rounded. I don't think he should be the Captain, but no one else really stands out, maybe Grabo?
