Can't be too mad. They stole the win from Verlander and Lester pitched well.
That may have been a loss, but there's a lot of positives to take away from it.
You named the only two good things to take out of this game, with the possible exception of the great game Sweeney had.
Verlander is dominating don't get me wrong, but 2 hits and 3 baserunners over 8 innings isn't good at all any way you look at it.
Guy who's suppose to be our closer hits the first batter he faces, the 9 hitter with a runner in scoring position. Yeah the umpire missed the call, but if they did rule he went around the ball still got away and the runners would have advanced anyways.
The way they lost today reminded me of the way they lost in September last year, good news is there's 161 games left. They will be fine I'm sure, but good lord this bullpen scares me.

I can't agree with that. This was not a "find a way to lose" situation. We were beat, and fairly, but we put up a good fight and made it close against a very good team and either the best or the second best starter in big league ball (it's pretty much a matter of preference between Verlander or Halladay). Lester performed brilliantly and fought his way through a good lineup and they almost pulled it out despite some pretty bad calls by the umps.
We put ourselves in a position to win several times and it didn't come through. Every team will have games like that every year.
Not really, he's your closer. He was only put in to bail Melancon out and unfortunately couldn't do it. He's supposed to be coming in with the bases empty unless he's bailing out Melancon in the 8th with a lead Melancon is trying to blow. Bobby V picked the right guy for closer.
You're kidding me, right? The situation wasn't even that bad, runners on first and second, one out and at the bottom of the order. Closers need to be able to handle those situations, not hit the 9 batter and serve up a fastball down the plate to the leadoff hitter. Aceves absolutely deserves a large part of the blame.
Aceves has at no point in his career been a closer, while Melancon was an 8th/9th inning guy all last year with indisputable better stuff. I'm taking Melancon as my closer every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Aside from Ortiz' double early on and Sweeney's triple in the 9th, what other "several" opportunities did they have to win? Verlander's talent isn't being debated right now, the fact that they put three runners on base in eight innings is however. It wasn't a "find a way to lose" situation because they were never in a situation to win, good teams find ways to get on and make things happen.
It was a bad game plain and simple and only the first game of the year, hopefully they come out and rebound Saturday.

It was a low scoring game that was tied for most of the game. This is a team that can run into one at any time. It just didn't happen today, that's literally all there is to it.
Stop overreacting to one loss against an excellent starter.

We're 0-1, big ****ing deal. As a fan and college baseball player I understand and couldn't care any less. However next time you want to debate a loss where they got dominated for all of one inning that you want to take "several positives" out of, justifying it with the possibility of a home run every once in a while doesn't cut it. Try telling that to a coach and see what happens.
However it's also the beautiful thing about baseball, if Sox can come out and rake on Saturday it will all be forgotten.
Something tells me that the starting pitcher of the Buffalo Bisons is a little easier to bat against than Justin Verlander. Just a hunch.

Then feel free not to click on the thread for the Red Sox fans. How would you feel if we went into a horse racing thread you were following and started posting THAT BARBARO IS GONNA MAKE A GREAT GLUESTICK ONE DAY.

I was absolutely in love with Masterson's sinker when he was here. I thought from his debut on that he was legit. I haven't seen a lot of individual pitches better than that fastball of his He could change speeds at will from 87-94 MPH with a lot of movement and when he controlled it it was pretty awesome to watch.
Should never have traded hm for Victor Martinez. Just think how useful he'd be for us this year.
