Is Gaborik our best free agent signing ever?

I have been only following the Rangers since the 2000-2001 season so for the most part I only know terrible free agent signings (even post lockout). Any free agent signings play a major role on the 94 team? I mean how many free agents in history score 40 goals in the first 3 seasons the team signs them?

He could very well be. I'd also put Girardi up there.

Wayne Gretzky was a pretty good one.

Even at the end of the his career, he put up 97 points, 90 points, and 62 points in 70 games in his 3 seasons as a Ranger. And this was during the height of the dead puck era. Without Gretzky and Richter, the Rangers don't come close to making an ECF run in 1997.

All right, I'm pretty ignorant about the 90s. I forgot about Gretzky and didn't know that Graves was a free agent signing.

I wouldn't say just yet, especially considering the witch hunt so many of us here wanted to commit against him.

Jagr was not a free agent. We got him for Carter.

Graves, Messier (the second time we got him), Gretzky and Gabby are the best free agents we acquired.

Messier the second time around was somewhat washed-up and the team was terrible, so didn't make a difference.

Gretzky helped a lot in 1997 in our Cinderella run, but then the next two season the team failed to make the playoffs.

Graves was a great signing. He was instrumental in bringing the Cup home, as well as in winning the President's Trophy in 1992 and the Cinderella run in 1997. Great signing.

Gaborik was probably the second-best signing, though if we go on to win the Cup during his tenure, it could be argued that he was the best ever signing. Certainly he's the best signing in two decades.

This thread makes me both angry and sad.

Angry because our former GM was a complete moron for letting Gabby walk for nothing. It's set our organization back quite a bit.

Sad because I miss him and all he brought to this team. He's the only dynamic player we've ever had. He's a game changer. No one since has ever had the effect on the Wild that Gaborik had.

Michael Nylander was a steal for us too..guy scored 83, and 79 points for us while making under 3 mil a year...pretty damn awesome bang for your buck.

Gabby gets a lot of ****, but I hope when he's gone people remember him as one of the best players on what should be some strong Rangers teams.

Love the guy and what he brings. When he's on his game, he's just a treat to watch. If he could stickhandle better, he'd be nasty. He has smarts, passing skills, and a dirty shot. Definition of a dynamic player.

Still a rough way to walk, but Richards might also be included in that category... Within a couple of years that is... Why? Because it's the cup

Honorable (early) mention: Brad Richards whose locker room presence has been applauded by quite a few of his teammates this year and probably a big reason for being #1 in the East. He's been a monster since March (along with Gaborik).

This thread will be troll-fest center for MSG.

And yes-Gabby has been great for us. So consistent this year too. Although I wish he could get a hatty this season. (playoffs would be cool too.)

I was thinking about this the other day.

Post-lockout, there's no question he's been the best free agent signing.

Richards could be up there too, but we have to wait and see.

Hate to keep going back to the '20s and '30s Rangers.

But Boucher, Cook brothers, Johnson... they were the equivalent of free agents.

Two time Stanley Cup winners as players.

Boucher a 3rd as coach/GM.
