They won a weak division with loser points. It's absurd that they could clinch the #3 seed with just one more loser point.
Yes we suck at gaining post regulation gimmick points...thank god the playoffs don't give them out.

Regardless thx for the win tonight!!! Might have to buy a READ jersey.

Good luck post season.

Cheers!

The fake points are the OT/SO WINS, not the loser points. For most of the history of the NHL, teams got 1 point for being tied after 60 minutes. The only stretch where they didn't was 1983-1984 (when OT started for the regular season) to 1998-1999 (the last season before OTL).

I don't care whether or not the Panthers deserve it. I'm pleased they're in. Doubly so that we helped them get in and knocked the Sabres out in the process. Hopefully the Panthers knock out the Devils as well.

Yes, but really the only seed which is always "hurt" by a possible "bad" 3rd seed is the 5th because they lose home ice in the first round. 1st and 2nd having to play a potentially tougher opponent because of it isn't really that big of a deal as they still have home ice and the 6th seed, as we all know, "benefits" from it.

Philly got the short end of the format this season, and Detroit looks to be getting it out West. Florida and LA both have more points than the 9th place teams in their conferences so the 9th place teams weren't denied anything.

Glad to help!

It's nice to shake up the playoff picture and the Flyers have stirred up a decent rivalry with the Panthers this season. Good luck, cats.

Bring back the rats!!!

Love that good ol florida team. Felt bad for them when they fell on hard times traded luongo for Bertuzzi, and a rash of other trades. Looks like they are finally putting it together.

Hey congrats to the Cats! I've been wanting to see them back in the second season for awhile. It's been a long time coming for them and hopefully this can help hockey in Florida. Just beat NJ and prove that you guys belong in the postseason.

And I agree with someone earlier, bring back the rats!

I'm loving the togetherness and camaraderie this year lol, it seems like the Flyers either 1) helped a team you cheer for get in, 2) kept a team you despise out or 3) are playing the most hated team in the NHL in the first round. We're all homies this year.

Go read some of their trade proposals, you'll hate them all over again

Returning The Favour

If memory serves me right the Panthers helped Philly get in a few years back by beating Carolina on the last day of the season.

I could be totally wrong though...lol.

Yeah, you're technically right. That was 2008. It was Carolina's last game, but the Flyers still had to play the Penguins, and nobody wanted it to come down to playing the Penguins to get into the playoffs. Luckily we just didn't give up a goal to either the Devils or the Penguins.

Here's the game you're referencing, guess who was the coach of the Hurricanes

The Flyers game ended first, I remember some of us waiting around checking phones to get the final.

Yep. And it's better for the game for Toronto to make it to the playoffs again some time.

The Panthers would be a 79-point #8 seed under the old W-L-T formula (with Buffalo still alive at #9).

I was at that game, we eliminated Carolina for sure. their fans are still pissed and thank god we are not playing them tonight for a playoff spot.

Once again, thx!

And if they were allowed to play with a rover like they did back in the 20's, maybe they'd have 120 points.

It's not a perfect system, the OTL serves a certain purpose. God knows as a franchise and market, the Panthers needed all the help they could get, but they still played by the same rules as the other 29 teams.
