The draft will last 25 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards, a coach and 4 extra picks.

Now on a 4 hour clock.

2). The time windows will be tight but reasonable.
  • 12 hour clock for the first two rounds, (sending a shortlist to another GM highly encouraged here)
  • then 10 hour clock for rounds 3-6,
  • then 8 hour clock for rounds 7-14,
  • then 6 hour clock for rounds 15-20,
  • then 4 hour clock for rounds 21-25
One hour time window deduction for each skipped pick (two hour deduction for missing a 12 hour clock - leave a list), with a minimum 4 hour clock guaranteed regardless of deductions.

3). Trades - No trades!
  • Swapping your entire set of draft picks with another GM before either of you has made a single pick is allowed, however.
4). ADD/DROPS - At the conclusion of the draft, there will be a 7 day period for add/drops. All add/drops must be 1-for-1. Dropped players will NOT be eligible to be added by other teams.

5). At the conclusion of the draft, there will be a 10 day period for lineup assassinations. Assassinations will be divided by division.

6). Regular season rankings MUST BE VOTED ON by at least one GM (if the team is co-GM'd) per team. The penalty if not done is a potential lowering in the standings because each GM will rank his own team first. Co-GMs who both vote each get half a vote for the regular season rankings in their own division.

GMs who vote in every round of the playoffs will get preference of their draft positions in the following draft.

7). All Teams make the playoffs. The conferences will be divided into two divisions of 7 each, with the regular season divisional winner getting a 1st round bye in the playoffs. The first round of the playoffs will feature three intra-divisional matchups in each division, after which the remaining teams will compete in divisional semifinals (standard high vs. low seed) and divisional finals rounds. Winners of the divisions will meet in the conference finals, and winners of the conference will meet in the draft finals.

8). NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!!!

9). PM the next team after you have made your pick. THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL!

Thanks for announcing my pick 87and71. Kevin Hatcher is a RH shot who can play the second unit of both special teams. I'm planning on doing just that while giving him #6 minutes at even strength - I think it's the best way to get the most out of his talents, while keeping the stupidity to a minimum.

Hatcher is a big, strong, and fast defenseman with a great shot, who was sometimes prone to spectacular brain farts, but his on-paper resume is excellent for a guy drafted at this point.

Yes, I'm going to use him on the PK - he was a top pairing defenseman on his team's PKs for 11 seasons in the NHL, and those PKs were generally well above average, despite not having spectacular goaltending. On the PK, he can keep things simple and act as a crease clearer. I see Hatcher as sort of a lesser version of Rob Blake in that regards - prone to bad decisions at even strength, but a strong PK guy because he can keep things simple.

I think Bergman is superior at even strength and Kevin Hatcher at special teams.

In a 32 team draft, I think Bergman is a good #4, while I don't know if I would want to give Hatcher those kind of minutes at this level. Not sure where Bergman fits along with the other #4s in a 28 team draft, but he's an excellent #5 regardless. Hatcher, however, is a strong player for the 2nd units of both special teams, IMO.

Something has been bothering me a bit. We should really clean up our positional listings in these draft threads. The system thus far has depended entirely upon who is editing the OP to determine positional listing, and it has led to a bit of a clusterf@ck with regards to the positional listings of certain players. This may not seem like a big deal, but people do look at these lists in order to determine the positional eligibility of players when planning their picks, so we should try to make them as accurate as possible. I'm just going to list changes I would suggest making to the OP, and my reasons for them. We can decide as a group what, if anything, needs to be done:

- Mark Messier - drop the LW. Short and undecorated portion of his career. Only a crazy person or someone with no real respect for the history of the game would actually play him there. It's nothing more than window dressing and an invitation to play an all-time great out of position in an attempt to game the system at a harder-to-fill position.
- Frank Nighbor - drop the LW for the same reasons.
- Syd Howe - drop the D. No evidence he ever was a full-time defenseman. May as well put a C/D on Sergei Fedorov if we're going down that path.
- Marty Barry - drop the LW. Same reason as for Messier.
- Mickey MacKay - drop the R. Rover is not a position in the ATD.
- Vyacheslov Starshinov - drop the LW. Same as Messier, and we also have only thin evidence that he ever played LW. There's a theme here...centers listed as LWs who really aren't wings.
- Phil Watson - make him an F or a C. I'm pretty sure he played both wings in his post-war career, though these are clearly not his prime seasons. I don't like Watson away from center, but he played enough wing, on both sides, to at least not be insulting in that position. If we're going to list him as anything other than a straight center, we may as well acknowledge that he played both wings.
- Don McKenney - drop the LW. See above.
- Don Marcotte - make him an F.
- Jack Adams - I believe he should also be an F, though I'd have to look at 70's old research to be sure.
- Dirk Graham - errr...give him a position.
- John Madden - someone tell me how much time he has really spent on the wing.
- Pavol Demitra - make him an F.
- Blair Russell - I think he may be an F, as well. HHOF says he played center and RW, but I have seen a contemporary newspaper article which calls him a LW. Does anybody have a clear handle on Russell?

Isn't MacKay a C/RW?

I believe that Jack Adams should be a C if you don't think a few games at LW in the playoffs should count.

I'm the one who first started calling John Madden a C/LW. He played LW intermittently through his career - spent at least 90% of his career at C. But when he was moved to LW, he did it well with no noticeable drop off in his defensive game, other than not being able to take faceoffs obviously. He usually played C because he was better at faceoffs than most other players on the Devils and because he had great chemistry with another checker on the Devils.

If we're calling Don Marcotte a F based on limited information that he could play all 3 forward positions (without any indication as to how often he actually played C or RW), I don't see why we wouldn't call Madden a C/LW

Anyway, I agree with you that some kind of standardization of positions is a good idea. When I update the OP, if whoever drafts a guy posts something that I know is completely inaccurate for his positional listings, I just ignore it.

He was a first team all star at left wing.

I agree though he played the vast majority of his career and got virtually all of his acclaim at C.

While you are technically correct that Messier was an all-star there, these are still far from his peak seasons and he won those awards largely because of the sorry state of the LW position in the early 80's. I mean...he beat out John Tonelli for the first award. Once Sather realized what an excellent center he was, there was never really a question which position he should play. I just don't like seeing LW next to Moose's name.

Basically, he usually played C, because he was one of the best defensive players on the team (while being a plus faceoff player), so he could have more of a defensive impact at C.

Started off as NJ's 4th line C and PK specialist, back when NJ rolled 4 lines. A certain player with an all-time great unibrow was entrenched as 3rd line C. When NJ wanted to stack their 3rd line as a checking unit (such as against the Lemieux-Jagr line in the 2001 playoffs), they would move Madden to LW of the line.

After unibrow left for a contract worth approximately 99 billion dollars, Madden was moved to 3rd line C and strictly played center for a number of years, with a heart-of-gold hands-of-stone checking LW on the ice with him almost all the time.

After the 2005 lockout when the Devils were in disarray, Madden was occasionally shifted back to LW (especially when unibrow briefly came back), and played well - his speed made him a strong up-and-down checker. But he always ended up back at C because the team needed him there more.

Since Madden pretty much has no playmaking to speak of, even at C, I don't think he loses much at LW, other than the ability to break up plays in the center of the ice and take faceoffs

As for Marcotte, my impression is that it was a Bob Gainey situation where he usually played LW, but could be moved to any forward position to check a certain player in a pinch. But I could be wrong. I would list him as a F, but I would be hesitant at playing him at C without more evidence. (But who would actually play him at C with the glut of checking centers available compared to wingers?)

I believe he was moved to LW to accommodate fat boy when the latter came to Boston. They were both on the team for three full seasons, so it could be that large a chunk of Barry's career (which would be enough, I guess, out of a nine season peak, to list him there), though I dunno if he really played LW over that whole span.

Didn't Demitra actually start his NHL career at LW and peak in AST voting at that position? Seems like he got moved around a lot in St. Louis (interestingly enough, he and Quenneville are reunited here) without any discernible difference in his level of play.

I always thought of Demitra as C/RW (probably because that's what yahoo fantasy hockey listed him as), but someone used him as a LW a few years ago, I questioned it, and was basically told that I was wrong

Yeah, that seems about right. Quite similar to Joe Klukay, as well. All three of these guys have a lot of similarities: big, strong, great checkers with offense that was so limited you wouldn't notice the difference asking them to play the off wing. None of the three would ever be played at center in the ATD by any sane GM, anyway.

Actually no, according to overpass' numbers, Guerin was not as good an ES scorer as Gaborik. I'll point the other guy out when he comes along, and really...he should be a slam dunk over Gaborik for pretty much every conceivable role.

Henry will have very little ES minutes we feel comfortable placing Delvecchio, Stasiuk or Marshall on the 4th line LW spot when they take a shift.

I admit Henrys ES numbers are weak but check out:

I like Henry as a PP specialist here (is he any worse than Tim Kerr?) but do you really need another net presence on the first unit with Beliveau there?

I was wondering about Dave Andreychuk as well.

I was expecting somebody to mention Beliveau, i'm going to be honest...I don't want my star player being looked upon as the "Net presence" on my 1st unit PP. With Wilson and Gilbert fire rockets at the net i'd prefer Henry in front and have Beliveau be able to control the PP more from the half boards and then filter towards the net for rebounds.

OH, I didn't even realize Andreychuk had been drafted already

You can obviously run your PP how you want, but to me, you are removing perhaps Jean Beliveau's greatest strength as a player by taking him away from the front of the net. I mean, he's a versatile guy and can do everything at a high level, but he was just so dominant in front of the net

Dont get me wrong there will be times where Beliveau will be in front as well. I just prefer to have a little flexibility with where on the pp he can be used.

My memory is a bit hazy but I think you're right.

I liked him, a strong defensive player in the shadow of Gainey (where he was a Selke runner-up one season), and Ramsay.....and quite underrated as an offensive player.

Anyone have the pre-1977/78 projected Selke Awards, if they exist?
