Are the Leafs THE biggest mess in the entire NHL?

Another win tonight, another 2 points that we don't need.
That seems to be the story the last few seasons for these Leafs teams.
Win meaningless games that cost us future great players and we end up
with possible 2nd line/2nd pairing talent instead of 1st line/top pairing talent.

After having a heated "discussion" with my father in law tonight (he's a Bruins fan..
it's been a rough year for me) it got me thinking: Just how big of a mess are the
Leafs in?

You look at every team in the playoffs and they have 3 things:

#1 centre, #1 d-man, #1 goalie

Looking at the Leafs roster and the Marlies roster...we don't have even 1 of
those things.

Even if you look outside the playoff picture, almost every team has a #1 centre,
#1 goalie and #1 d-man either on their team or in the pipeline.

Sure, we can say guys like Kadri, Colborne and Biggs are "great prospects"...
but the fact is, they'll likely max out as 2nd liners (if that).

I turn 22 in July and I remember all the great years with Sundin, Cujo and Co.
and it seems like year after year it's just getting harder and harder to support
this team and stick up for this once proud organization.

If you look at the picture without "blue and white goggles on"..the picture looks
pretty bleak, does it not?

And please Leaf fans, don't tell me that Ross and Carrick are going to bring us
the cup...

The biggest? No. I think that honour goes to Calgary. They have Iginla and Kipprusoff, that's it.

I'm waiting to see what happens this off-season and next season with a Carlyle coached team before I'll say they are the biggest mess in the league.

Leafs were playing very good hockey for 2/3 of the season so we know they are capable. We'll see if the new coach and any moves in the off season will help sustain the good play.

Another season like this one next year though and I think things will get ugly...

Not every playoff team, and definitely not every team has a #1 center, #1 defenseman and #1 goalie, nor do you need all to win a Stanley Cup.

We are closer to those things than most doom-and-gloomers on here realize.

No we are not the biggest mess in the NHL.

Put your mindless drivel in some other Leaf-bashing thread that pollutes the Leaf forum (ironic, isn't it?).

Or better yet, join another team if you think we are in such a mess (and that goes for all the other complainers). Believe me, we won't miss you.

I'm assuming you're not counting Gardiner as a prospect anymore?

Also, whoever we draft this year will be a very high-end prospect. I still believe Colborne also has high-end potential. I probably wouldn't give up on him for another 4 or 5 years.

With the collapse of the leafs, I have no clue what Burke's team strategy is. Much of what he has said and promised - has been proven to be false. Aside from a question of Burke's credibility, who knows what Burke does now.

The leaf team he has put together is a disaster with gaping holes in goal, on defence and on the forwards.

This.

The Oilers (who everyone doesn't stop praising) have been tanking for 4 years, and they only have 1/3 of #1C, #1G,#1D (Although if they draft Dumba this can change).

Calgary, Columbus, Carolina, and Edmonton all say hi. Minnesota's freefall was pretty much entirely injuries.

Calgary, Columbus, Montreal are all in worse shape.

Tampa has very similar issues (good offense, poor defensive support and goaltending fail)

Islanders and Edmonton are two teams who can't seem to get out of the basement, but all signs indicate that they have a bright future ahead.

The Leafs demise is highly exaggerated, I would say Tampa has had an even more disappointing season overall. They went from Game 7 ECF to potentially bottom 5 in the league in the span of one season, with no significant roster turnover and even while having Stamkos score ~60goals -- pretty pathetic.

This.....to people in this thread, we have a 1B defencman (phaneuf) we have guys coming back looking to make big contrubutions (schenn, gardiner, liles, franson all top 4 guys) and then a VERY steady defender in gunnerson. We need a goalie and a top 6 center with high end skill for kessel aka galchenyuk but also need a bonefide #1 goalie, aka luongo. Our D is fine but goalies and #1 center to being very close for the cup imo

They're definitely falling into that Columbus pattern of high picks but not high enough.

Yes, they are. Calgary is giving them a run for their money but only Leaf fans would give them a standing ovation for missing the playoffs and after 3.5 yrs of building the team, they're as mediocre as ever.

Don't forget they're the team since the lockout with the longest playoff drought.

Not even close and I disagree with notion that Montreal is worse off as well. I think both may be in playoffs next year...at least competing better than this year anyway.

No the Leafs aren't a mess...but playoffs should have easily been a lock. It's been one hell of a fall...it kind of compares to the epic collapse of the Red Sox last season.

Really? Carolina and Edmonton say hi?
Maybe it's just me, but I would take Eric Staal, Jeff Skinner and Cam Ward or Hall, Eberle and RNH as the foundation of my team before I took Kessel, Grabovski and Phanuef...
