Don't think it would have mattered, RNH and Landeskog's teams both missed the playoffs and one of them are most likely going to win it.
That's true but maybe playoffs would've given Gardiner an edge over those two? Tough to say..it's hard to compare forwards and defencemen. There's must be more to consider than just point totals.
I'd love if Suter wanted to come here, he'd give us the #1 d we are looking for. Dion would be gone, but he could also provide us with a decent forward in return, pipe dreams.
Or give us a pairing similar to Suter/Weber in Nashville. Phaneuf is getting a lot of hate lately but he's still a top pairing dman with a killer shot and good offensive instincts.

Exactly. IF for some reason, Suter wanted to come here, that doesn't signal the end of The Dion in Toronto.

The Calder and other trophies are based on individual player performance in the regular season.. So I not sure how Leafs making the playoffs would have any bearing at all on who is considered rookie of the year.

Yeah exactly. It would actually give Burke a lot of options moving forward and give him that elite NHL defense that he's always preached about having. While Phaneuf makes mistakes defensively, he's actually improved his defensive game a ton since his days in Calgary. He's just getting exposed because he's playing a ton of minutes against elite lines every night and not getting much help defensively from the other dman.
Suter would actually hide his inconsistencies, allow him to step up more on players and give thunderous hits, jump up in the play more often without having to worry about the defense and just have a stronger more dependable parter. As good as Gunnarsson and Gardiner have been, they just don't provide the solidifying play of a guy like Suter.
Now obviously two issues would exist. Suter probably doesn't want to come to Toronto, for obvious reasons, and salary would need to be readjusted. Schenn could be traded, Komisarek traded, Lombardi/Connolly traded/bought out. It wouldn't be impossible to fit Suter.
The second one is much easier to fix than the first one though. Maybe Burke pulls his best salesmen move and pulls something out of his ass, but I don't really expect that.

I guess it would have looked better for Gardiner if the Leafs did make the playoffs and he served a "key" role in doing so. It also would have given him a little extra time in the rookie spotlight being in the playoffs. So I could see how that could have helped him, but it's still an individual thing.

If he played a key role it would certainly help his case. Landeskog will certainly get more attention for his role in the Avs playoff run.
Gardiner has no chance of winning, Landeskog and RNH have just been too good, but he might have a chance at being a finalist.
Jake Gardiner was a center for most of his hockey career, before switching to defense as he entered College..
He reminds me of a young Phil Housley, and that certainly puts him in good company. He looks to have a very bright future ahead based on what we're seeing in his rookie year.
too bad we are so stacked at Center cus it would be interesting to see how he plays at Center. He might look good between Kessel and Lupul
Seriously, I know he can be far more effective at D and could eventually play 25-30 minutes per night. I can imagine him getting a phone call from his buddy Justin, congratulating him on getting 30 points. I'm sure Jake tells him: It's so great to play here...young guys get a chance! Sign here and we could be a D pairing again NEXT Year! We have the youngest team in the league and are on the way up!
I love how we acquired him in the first place.
Beauchemin leaves Anaheim to sign with us as a UFA, we trade him back to Anaheim a year and a half later to get Gardiner. Oh yeah, and we made them throw in a PPG winger as well in Lupul.
I know that nobody expected the deal to go this well for us, but if Burke gets trashed for how the Kessel deal turned out after the fact, he deserves a lot of credit for this deal.
he's special and he's fast but he's also very small, someone is gonna catch him eventually.
Karlsson is 6'0 180lbs. Gardiner is 6'1 173lbs. According to the same site anyway. So...I mean, I think if one is 'very small', the other can't be percieved as big.

What a bright spot he has been. Can't wait until he gets a few more years under his belt. Hopefully no sophmore slump...
That would be incredible if he had no sophmore slump.

Kinda like Kaberle but better.

Here's hoping that many more successful and more impressive seasons follow. Burke may take a lot of flack, but this trade was amazing.
Let's hope he keeps it up next year and for the rest of his career.

.....and we still have a draft pick coming to us out of that deal.
Thats a big if, both figuratively and because its bolded.
I wasn't sure people really understood the grasp of my 'if'.
I haven't notice Gardiner get rocked this year (mostly because of how well he sees the game and his moves) so I don't see his size being an issue. 6'1 is pretty good. Maybe bulk on a few pounds of muscle in the summer so he can push people around in the D zone. I'm not concerned though.
