Looking forward to getting it, hopefully the EB games near me actually has it in stock.
The only RPGs I've ever played for more than 20 minutes are the pokemon games, but since the first videos of this surfaced I've been eagerly awaiting it's arrival.
I picked it up yesterday. Came with an art book. Too bad I can't play it until after this research paper and finals. I also have five or six other games to finish dating back to last September, but I bought it anyways because I figured it might turn out to be a pain in the ass to find down the road.
I also heard it isn't worth playing unless you have one of those Classic Pro controllers, which I don't have right now either.
I'd like to, but I have some other expenses right now. Also, the fiance' is pushing to get that Spyro game for the kid. Yeah, because I look forward to shelling out $8 a pop for new characters...
Good: It's the best JRPG in a while. Great combat, scale, tons of things to do. I don't know about the US version but the British cast is awesome.
Bad: It's still a JRPG. Overly long, repetitive, cliche JRPG story and characters. This should please the ADD generation as you've got more random **** popping on the screen than CoD multiplayer.
Overall though, I played it for around 15 hours, at which point I wasn't having fun anymore but was completely content that I got to play it. I'd rate what I've played a solid 8.
BTW at 15 hours, I was only 1/4 of the way through the game, so be ready to put a lot of free time aside if you want to beat it.
Good
- Love the customization they give in the options, including the ability to turn off the mini map (one of my biggest pet peeves), hint markers, subtitles, English/Japanese voice cast, etc.
- You don't need to switch the game to Japanese because the British voice cast do a great job. No silly/whiny voices... so far at least
- Pretty interesting concept for a world setting
- The world graphics & art design is gorgeous
Bad
- The UI seems to be kind of crappy and cumbersome.
- I'll try with the classic controller tomorrow but the wii-mote is poorly implemented, which unlike most I actually prefer to play with.
- It doesn't really bother me but for something that's supposed to make me feel nostalgic for a JRPG I'm not a big fan of the MMORPG influence.
- While the scenery is great, I'm getting a bit of an uncanny valley vibe with the characters. For the more realistic style they're trying to go for the graphics are kind of crappy... I'll need to take a second look at some of those high-res youtube video's to see if it's any better at a higher res. Can't just blame the Wii's shortcoming since Square did just fine here with FFX and FFXII.
Overall I'm pretty happy so far. Pretty much from the start of this console gen I've been saying that JRPG's should be migrating to the Wii.
Finally got this recently, the first time I played I put in half an hour, then today I popped it in and ended up playing for 3 and half hours straight. I felt a little overwhelmed at first, like most RPGs they throw so much at you at the beginning.
One point that bugged me. I accepted a quest to fix this woman's watch, I fix it and when I tried to bring it back I couldn't find her. Basically spent half an hour looking for her and never ended up finding her. I wish there was a way to highlight where she was on the map. Most of the quests didn't involve going back to find the person at least.
I'm having trouble focusing on everything during battle still, I tend to get tunnel vision just staring at my arts, waiting for them to refresh. The camera has buggered up on my a couple of times too.
