I realize I am a couple days late on this, but I took my boys to the game Wed. in St. Louis. First of all, you guys dampened my son's 11th birthday by beating us in the shoot-out. When I say hate, I mean the Wings in general. Not really anyone in particular. When we went up 2-0, my 13 year old looked at me and said, "we got this." I told him I have seen this game too many times to think that. Sure enough, bang and bang it's 2-2. UGH. When it went to the shoot-out, I knew we were toast. I already know how Blues fans feel about this, but how many Wings fans thought Reaves deserved that 5 minute major? I understood the penalty on Steen for knocking down Bertuzzi, but how did Franzen not get a penalty on Backes? I am thankful that in the end, the refs did not influence the outcome of the game. We got beat fair and square and I just hope you guys lose in the first round so we have a shot at the Cup. Sadly, there are 3 sure things in life....Death, taxes and the Blues losing to the Wings. In all seriousness, good luck in the playoffs. I am thankful we are back again.

Good to see the Blues joining civilization again after a bit of a dark age. Back in the day, the Blues were just a shade below Detroit, Colorado and Dallas as a Western Conference powerhouse. But at their peak, goaltending just wasn't up to snuff.
This isnt directed to you OP but I find it hilarious how hard the blues are trying to blame the refs for that game. The 5 minute major was a bad call but if Backes doesnt skate over to try to start **** with Franzen that play doesnt happen, then when he sells it the ref probably said too bad hes not getting that call.
There was another play where Steen had Kronwall in a headlock basically and whipped him around when he was forechecking but there was no call there. The reffing was bad both ways in that game but a lot of blues fans were looking for an excuse so they blamed the refs.

Since you're asking:
Initially after the Reaves hit I thought it was a minor at worst, but after a couple replays I decided that the fact that Stuart was already off balance after being bumped meant that Reaves needed to give up the check, and he had time to do so. Not the worst hit ever, but I don't disagree with the call.
Regarding Franzen-Backes, I think consistency would have demanded a call (maybe offsetting minors with an extra 2 for blood), but personally I'm completely okay with it being ignored based on 1: It was a minor extracurricular activity after the period was over, 2: Neither player was innocent, both were agitating each other, and 3: I always hated the double minor for blood rule because a little visible blood does NOTHING to tell you whether one penalty is more severe than another. When you cut yourself shaving you get over it in about 2 seconds flat.
I know I'm making the homer call there but I like to think if it was the reverse situation I would have been fine with it as well (maybe after an initial knee-jerk reaction of outrage).
On another note: I'm starting to love how these STL-DET games are going and I think they'd make for an awesome WCF.
Didn't mean the post to come off as a "blame the ref" thread. I just found it weird how some ticky tack calls were made and not some of the other obvious calls missed on both sides. Steen gave Fillpula a pretty good slash leading to our second goal. I realize Backes is no choir-boy on the ice, and I didn't have a problem with the first jab, but hitting a guy on the ice should be automatic. Anyway, I really enjoyed the game. Looks like we can start our rivalry again.

Here's hoping to renewed rivalry.
Thanks for the Roman Turek flashback. Now I need to get drunk.

Tell your 13 year old to keep his head held high and enjoy the game. The Blues' fortunes are looking up for the first time in quite a while.
I remember my father and brother went to game 7 against the Sharks back in '94 and my brother (who was 12 at the time) had Osgood's #30 painted on his cheek. If you haven't seen a replay, Osgood made a pretty glaring rookie mistake to end the series in that game. 18 years later the Sharks have eliminated the Wings 2 years in a row and my brother hasn't gone into convulsions from any residual scaring.
The major penalty was a bit much but refs always make that call when a guy goes down in the corner like that. Zetterberg got 5 and a game earlier this season when he placed a hand on Nikitin's (?) back and the guy blew a tire and hit the boards hard.

the Blues go away with more **** then the Devils did the next night. I bolded the most obvious one that wasnt called.
I actually asuumed this was going to be a wing fan with the I hate hulder, Howard lost the last game for us why cant we trade for Nash, Getslap, and malkin thread

good luck in PO.
if all things go well, we will see each other in 2nd round so you can relieve that Yzerman top corner goal all over again.
Sorry they had to ruin your birthday gift to your son, but I do hope we have to play each other in the second round this year because the wings can't just give up the division title to someone and not want a rematch.
In our country children are never cry accompany with his parents after defeat. We say usualy something like: hey dude, dont be a panic we get from them what we are need in next game.
