Agreed. Burish should have been taken off the #1 PK unit. He was pretty bad. Unfortunately he and Ott were the only ones who could win faceoffs this year.

to be fair they actually have more players who are worthy of top 6 minutes

It sounds like Morrow is just going to rest away his injuries this offseason. Not surgery.

http://www.defendingbigd.com/2012/4/...ce=twitterfeed

Quote:
Morrow told the media Wednesday that he has some options on how to manage things this off-season, and that getting away from the injections he's been getting for years now could make them more effective down the line if he's able to supplement with something else. He mentioned protein injections as a possible alternative.

When asked what he needs to do different going forward, he said "Pretty much everything. Completely different. Rest is probably the first thing, then get a couple of opinions of what's best."

He doesn't need to change the way he trains forever, however, if he can just get his issues settled down over the next three to four weeks before he starts training again, he said.

"I'll take care of the bothersome parts [presumably the disk in his neck] and heal those up and then I'm going to go back to training the way I had in the past and use the same trainer I had in the past. It's what I'm comfortable with."
Doesn't really sound that promising to me.

No it doesn't. Hasn't this been going on for years?

I thought they said the first injection held him over for a year or more. The second one only lasted 6 months or so ... and the subsequent have been less and less effective.

If doing nothing but resting was going to work ... wouldn't they have already tried that?

Plus, he now says he's not going to change the way he trains? When he was out during the season, they said he was able to come back by doing new exercises that focused specifically on that area.

How many teams have ever waived a captain, though?

This would be one for the books.

It almost makes me wonder if the doctors said that surgery isn't actually going to help all that much; that neither option is "good." So all things being equal they just decided to avoid the knife. It doesn't hurt to go that route if you're planning to field offers for the player and he isn't coming off surgery and is, per doctor's orders, resting the ills away. Sounds less severe.

My memory is foggy on this, but I believe...

Dallas Drake, as captain of St. Louis, was bought out. Blessing in disguise, he won the Cup in 2008 with the Wings.

Wikipedia confirms:

Quote:
Drake signed with the St. Louis Blues for the 200001 season, and remained with the organization for six seasons. He achieved his career high in goals with 20 during the 200203 season, and was named captain for the 200506 and 200607 seasons.
Drake was placed on waivers by the Blues on June 26, 2007 with the purpose of buying out his contract.

Do you think there are too many passive voices at the top here to light a fire when it's needed?

Mike Heika: Yes. In fact, I think the entire organization is passive. Ron Washington is a player's coach, but he has Nolan Ryan at the top of the organization and other tough voices inside. Someone has to instill fear in an organization. Someone has to be the hammer, and the Stars are lacking that. It would be nice to have that in a player, but I think it might be just as important to have it in management or coaching. I think the Stars should consider bringing in a veteran for the coaching staff that isn't afraid of ruffling some feathers
I've never agreed with Heika more. Completely agree.

So the locker-room is a bunch of pansies afraid to hurt the players feelings? As we feared? Wonderful.

Shoulda hired Torts/Lavi.

I agree with the sentiment.

I do kind of disagree with his assessment of where that voice comes from within the Rangers organization; there is a lot more to Wash than him being a "player's coach." He will stick with his guys but if he feels like a guy isn't giving him what he expects he usually adjusts. But the Rangers definitely have that voice from a few places. The Stars seem to be completely lacking in that area.

All I want is some honest-to-god internal assessment going on, and subsequently some tough decisions made.

Its nothing new that there is no toughness or voice in the lockerroom (Morrow, Gully, Etc) but no fear or toughness from the whole organization to maybe stop this passive ****? Wow and at one point Derian Hatcher played here and was our captain...Now they are a bunch of pusses it sounds like. Why not change big D to small D.

Hitch would have been perfect, rookie coach , inexperienced Gm only Lites has aclue and he is really about selling the product not putting a product on the ice. Gully will be lucky to last the season. newy will be gone by this time next year and the damage will have been done if the Neal trade is any indication

Fire Nieuwendyk? Fire Gulutzan? Am I the only one who doesn't see it??? We spent to the cap floor this season. The $14.5m we had available would have paid for Brent Seabrook, Patrick Kane and Dave Bolland. Add anything close to that to this team and we win the Pacific in a walk.

For real. At least Scuba types legibly to go with his negativity.

It's been stated numerous times that Gulutzan is a "long-term coach." I don't think he gets fired anytime soon.

Those type of players are very hard to find...
