Makes me so glad we didn't go the FA route.

Didn't they still try to sign Redden anyway? I seem to remember Dallas was the bargaining chip to drive up Redden's ultimate contract with NY.

His time in Tampa started off really well and then was basically a nightmare, due in large part to factors outside of his control.
Of course it's a hunch. I just don't think Smithy was developed enough to be our starter 3 years ago. We'd have had to cut ties with Turco after one of his best post-season performances ever, and I don't see that happening. I think Smith was a victim of timing. He was too good to stay another year, and we didn't know that Turco was going to completely turn his career upside down after 08.

I don't necessarily buy that Smith would have definitely left via free agency.

Maybe not, but I think he deserved the opportunity to try to be a starter somewhere, and Dallas (at the time) wasn't going to be able to offer that.

Turco began his precipitous decline the year directly after going to the conference finals. Even though he was the goalie when they made it there it's still possible he could have been supplanted in at least a tandem situation as early as 2008-09 if Smith were there.

Then again, with Smith and no Richards is Turco a goalie that makes a run to the WCF? Probably not, in which case he's just the guy who's been on the team for a long time but is starting to look like he won't be for much longer after. Furthermore, it's possible (I would argue probable even) that Smith could have been substituted in the playoffs in 2008 had Turco faltered, not unlike a Schneider/Luongo situation.

I know a 'what if' is a can of worms with too many loose ends to nail down. I still like thinking teasing my poor brain with the possibilities.

I think they were going after both d-men if I recall.
Would have been happy if Campbell had signed here but not for the contract he got, that's for sure.

Now that you mention that, I recall Atlanta was heavy into Campbell as well.

TSN just said that Brett Hull is expected to take a job with St. Louis, maybe Gainey will be replacing Hull?

Hull was already gone. And they'll actually listen to Gainey. This is basically the role Dave Taylor was in a while back.

Here's the blog entry.

Guy who put together our '99 and '00 team? I like it. Hopefully this is a sign of better things to come.

Right, I knew that too. I'm happy to have Gainey though, can never hurt to have lots of top executives to help make important decisions.

I'm not going to dump on Gainey because I think it's a good think he's joining the team ....

But if you're going to use that logic to dismiss failed trades ... you have to use that logic to dismiss him "building" the Dallas teams of the late 90's. Using your logic, that's all on the scouts.

At some point the GM is responsible. I've said in the past, specifically with the draft, that the selection process is mainly the scouts, but maybe a more accurate view of that would be everything falls on the GM because it's his responsibility to put the best people in place that he can to help make decisions. If poor scouting caused a bad trade or wasted draft picks, then the GM should ultimately be responsible and take action (i.e. make changes).

Regardless ... it does seem like faulty logic to embrace successes while dismissing failures. No one is perfect, but overall I think Gainey is a great presence ... which you seem to feel as well.

This franchise is so unbelievably stuck on the people that were around during those times....it's absolutely ridiculous.

I do think Gainey will help GMJN but good Lord.

Agreed. It's depressing how so many of these people are retreads. Strangely enough Gaglardi doesn't seem at all interested in cleaning house or bringing in his own people. It's just more of the same "getting the band back together" mentality. Then the one guy who we don't re-hire might win the Jack Adams.

Yep.

I'm not necessarily sold on this move. I'm OK with only because he's in a consulting role, and that's fine. But my god did he make some brutal trades in Montreal. Please don't consult with him when it comes to deal away youth.

I see the negatives in it, and have pointed them out myself as well.

That said, the Blues (read Doug Armstrong) have had a ton of success reuniting players/coaches from the past (Hitch, Langs, Arnott). Not that Langs or Arnott are major pieces in that success though. They are just nice, complimentary players.

He did for Armstrong ... the person I mentioned.

The point is it's obviously not uncommon for GMs/teams to draw from a place of comfort. It's not just Dallas living in the past of '99. You can find similar examples for nearly every team.
