I wouldn't do that trade. I don't think you trade a Loui Eriksson or a Jamie Benn for another team's spare parts. The only two scenarios I can see Eriksson being traded is
a) as part of a package if another team is shopping around a dynamic young talent for some reason who is clearly superior to Loui, for example if the Lightning are looking into trading Steve Stamkos. That's a highly unlikely scenario and Detroit doesn't have anyone even close to fitting the bill.
b) If it's 3 years from now and we're in the last year of Eriksson's contract and the bottom has fallen off the team and they figure they want to rebuild, they could trade him off for some top end prospects. Detroit does have some top end prospects (Brenden Smith, Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Jurco), but Dallas isn't in the spot where they would consider doing that right now.
I wouldn't either but who else do you want from Detroit? Datsyuk is the only one that even comes on my radar and they aren't getting rid of him.
If it's a Datsyuk for Louie trade in the first place then it's not worth doing, due to Datsyuk's age.
We're horrible trade partners when it comes to stars on the team. Plus superstar for superstar trades are very rare now. So the 'spare parts' idea is really actually pretty clsoe to what would happen if that scenario went down.
Anyone else see the full-page, full-color gigantic picture of Loui in today's Startlegram? It's got the opening night date and time against the Coyotes underneath. Marketing department kicking into high gear.
