Proposal: Oilers and Panthers

Smyth straight up for Jokinen.

Smyth is a Keenan kinda guy for sure, and Edmonton needs a top line C. Schremp maybe able to do it, but even if he can, he is a few years away.

Also given the pairing of Jokinen and Umecivic in the SEL right now, these guys play well together.

Thoughts?

We need a centre but not THAT badly. From an Oilers stand point, I politely pass.

Heck no from a FLA perspective. Jokinen is like Keenan's child. I don't think Keenan would ever trade him.

Plus, IMO I'd rather have Jokinen in FLA than Smyth. Just my personal homerism. Smyth is good, but IMO he needs a supporting cast more than Jokinen does.

How about Jokinen and Weiss for Smyth, Reasoner and Horcoff?

If Jokinen and especially Weiss are "very nice players", then so is Smyth. Also, Reasoner and Horcoff are certainly not scrubs, flames fan.

First of all, FLA is not going to move Olli J., so there isn't much basis for conversation here. The whole Smyth as a principal for Olli J. is a bad place to start from the beginining.

Second, Reasoner has zero trade value. Horcroff has some trade value, but not a lot.

Third, Florida has a very tight budget, don't expect them to fork over good young players who are not making much for expensive players like Smyth and Smith, especially in these pre-CBA days.

Just my opinion, but I see absolutely no basis for a deal here. But, again, that is just how I see it and I make no promises.

So, are you saying that Reasoner and Horcroff at at the level of Weiss and Jokinen (in terms of trade value)? Reasoner and Horcroff combined could not get you Weiss' left skate.

Jokinen is going to be looking for more than the $3.5 mil smyth makes very soon.

That being said, I wouldn't do this deal from an Oilers perspective either... Jokinen pegs me as a guy who will rollercoaster up and down his whole career in terms of production.

As a panthers fan, i'd take it the blink of an eye.

I would love to have smyth on any of my favorite teams, bruins, panthers, thrashers, and preds.

You want Olli J?

Start talking with players like Hemsky or Brewer. No deal would go down unless FLA got a star player in return. Too many times have stars been dealt here for prospects.

I would say NO from Oilers pov. I think Smyth is very under-rated player, he is one hell of a leader and is the heart of the Oilers, I like Olli he is a great player, but I Like Smyth better he is a total pakage.

I doubt it. Olli J. will be negotiating for his new contract under a different CBA. For that reason, he is unlikely to get numbers anywhere close to Smyth's current level.

im a little confused by what your saying here? you would rather trade for Hemsky (who is still a prospect), but you go on to say that you want star players not prospects.

in my opinion, I would say that Smyth is probably the oilers ONLY star player (no offense to York, Brewer, etc..)

anyways, I dont think I would do the deal. I like Jokinen and I think the trade value is probably pretty close, but I would have a very hard time dealing Smyth away.

Yes, us oilers fans overrate our players. But I would do Brewer for Jokinen if thats what it took. Maybe thats just me. Anyways, I don't really see the teams making any trades any time soon, especially since this is being brought up simply because Umicevic, who is by no means a sure bet to play in the nhl, has played a few games with Jokinen and clicked.

Wow, a few months ago, most Oiler fans said that it would take Olli plus to get Brewer. Now it seems at least one would do it in a heartbeat and run away laughin, or close to it anyways.

These Oliers/Panthers trades for Smyth/Smith/Brewer for Olli/Weiss/whoever have been done cesslessly. Its been goin on for more than a year, posssibly almost two. Pretty much ever since Brewer and Bouwmeester played in the World Championships together. I don't foresee anything really changing in the eyes of Panthers' or Oilers' fans' views without another season transpiring first.

You have me with this one. You contradict yourself in back to back sentences. If the Oilers want Olli, the deal will start with Smyth or Brewer, as both are about the same age (Smyth two years older). And there's really only been once that a "star" was traded to Florida for what amounted to "prospects". That was the Bure/Jovo trade. Most of the other moves that didn't amount to much were either free agent signings or players that couldn't necessarily be termed "stars". But if you're talkin tradin "stars" away from Florida for prospects, mentioning Hemsky's name is doin the exact same thing. again.
