Salak's having issues, Hutton's not ready yet (and not sure if he has real consistent backup potential), and Emery's been decent overall and had a few quality games despite playing far more then any of us expected.
I agree that he doesn't deserve a raise, let alone one that doubles it. Is he THAT underpaid or deserve THAT much more? He's a good guy to have if you run into some problems, but I know there might be a goaltender out there for that price who could probably do a better job is Stan looked into it more.
And seriously what has Emery done to deserve a raise?
You mean besides having a decent record at 15-9-4 and actually being fairly solid at the start of the year and being a decently reliable backup for the most part while the other netminders in our system were having issues or just plain not ready?
He's not a great goalie, obviously, but if he was.... he wouldn't be a backup right now. Hopefully, next year, he'll get less ice time then he got this year, as I think that playing in as many games was what has affected him recently, but at the start of the year he was actually solid for us and helped us out in a big way a couple times when Crawford needed his head set straight in a big way.
Overpay? Probably, but not nearly enough to warrant getting upset over, though.
He's an adequate backup. One in the hand is worth two in the bush. Can likely do better this off-season, but it's better to have a sure thing than swing and miss and be stuck with Carter Hutton.

This, its obvious they don't want to have to mess around trying to sign a backup in the offseason. Sign the guy who played adequate this year that's already been in the system. None of our prospects are near ready to take the role anyway.
Also, LOL at anyone who thought we'd be going after other goalies for next season.
I'm cool with Emery as a backup. He deserves another shot. Plays well enough to take Crawford's spot if need be.
I think both goalies will have bounceback years mostly because we will have 4 top 4 defenseman. This year we played with only 3 top four defenseman and a pair of number 5's.
The GAA has been better since acquiring Oduya and this has helped goaltending. There is a reason that we had no shutouts and it was just as much the defenses fault as the goalies.
I'm not super excited about both goalies coming back, but it allows Stan to focus on other areas during free agency. Plus both goalie contracts are decent where neither one is a heavy cap hit.
