I expect a high scoring game tommorow, what other pitches does Carreno has other than that nasty slider?
fangraphs data from the limited major league experience he had last year says he throws low-mid 90s heat, a nasty low 80s curve (it calls it a curve, but every scouting report says slider. So I'm guessing his slider has a lot of "tilt" to it and is more like a slurve) and rarely a mid 80s changeup.
All the reports say the slider is plus, and his fastball could be plus if he could control it better. The change is just a pitch to keep hitters honest and not something he could ever really rely on. There's also somewhat of a consensus that he'll end up in the bullpen at the major league level when it's all said and done, largely because he only has one above average pitch and 2 overall useful pitches.
But hey, Alvarez succeeded last year in the bigs as a 2 pitch guy, so at the very least Carreno can provide some useful stall time until McGowan is ready to return.

didn't we start last year on fire? this team lacked consistency and experience last year. especially in the bullpen. i'm curious to see how our kids develop a year into their careers. I'm stoked!
Bingo. After the Leafs start this year, the Jays would need to go 20-0 for me to be slightly excited.
Surprised they're not using Villanueva as the fill-in starter untill McGowan comes back. Carreno was great last season, but I don't know if he can be good for the Jays as a starter, even for only a month.

It's quite disruptive to move a pitcher back and forth between the pen and the rotation. It's done fairly regularly, but it's been known to throw pitchers out of synch as they adjust to the different work loads. I think they're only using Carreno for 1 start anyway so there's no point in risking anything with CV for a single start. Plus, Carreno hasn't gotten an opportunity to start with the Jays as of yet, which is something management wants to see I guess.

they did that with Villanueva and Perez last year and both of them were crap after going back to the bullpen. Better to not mess with them if they're in a defined role. Carreno was a bullpen guy last year for the Jays, but he starts in the minors.
And if the Yankees lose tonight as well then they and the Sox will be 0-2, while the Jays and Rays will be 2-0. The future is now! The Orioles could also be 2-0. Imagine Rays, Jays, and O's are all 2-0 while the Yanks and Sox are 0-2.

quite confident the O's won't be 3-0 to start the season. neither will the yankees be 0-3, the sox on the other hand could easily lose again tomorrow but it solely depends on if buckholz/their offense shows up.

Take out the laugh and you have my sentiments exactly. I'm going to call it right now... Blue Jays-Braves World Series. (if only there was a Tomahawk Chop emoticon).

I'll wait until we play some real teams before I get excited. We've had to come back down two games in a row to the Indians. That could be looked as both good and bad.

I have no basis for my pronouncement other than the rabble-rousing of Bob McCown and a visceral feeling.

We overcame two great pitching performances by the Indians, including one where our own starter couldn't find the strike zone for about 2 innings. I think we lose these games last year, to be honest.

I've had my heart broken too many times by Toronto sports franchises to invest too seriously. If the Jays can put together a serious run, and I mean be challenging for the division or at least a playoff spot into August or September, then I'll pay attention.

I'm sure McGown should be back before the end of April. I think this is the only start Correno will make then they will go with the 4-man rotation until April 21st.
Side note: Anxious to see how Drabek will perform in the Sox series. I feel confident with Alvarez.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. McGowan will NOT pitch in April. The Jays themselves have said it.
The guy has plantar faciatis which is painful as hell. Combine that with the fact that because of it, he can't throw as it alters his arm angle which is causing him shoulder pain.
We'll see Dusty in May once the PF heals and he can build up his arm strength.
