The sad optimism that comes along with the start to every Isles season....that 0-0 and record and the hope that we all have.

I am looking forward to the following:
- A worse record after we hire worse UFAs for our blueline.
- Watching Donovan/CdH/Ness get rushed up to the club full time.
- Seeing Cap get fired after the club slumps it's way out of the playoffs by December.
- Putting a paper bag over my head when Doug Weight gets promoted to coach.
- Watching Paw Wittle Wicky try to play and break more ****.
- Hearing Wang and Snow lie about the playoffs being their prime concern and doing everything and anything "that makes sense" to improve the club.
- Hearing Nassau County politicians chase snipes in Newsday.
- Seeing Strome rushed up.
- Experiencing Nino doubling his point totals on the year to four.
- Cringing while Tavares gets injured by some pug like Cooke while his team mates are busy looking for where their tampons fell out in the opposite corner.

Did I forget anything?

The bold is powerful, and the only difference between the Islanders and the San Jose Sharks is that the Sharks' organization knows how to get into the playoffs, but doesn't know what to do when they get there. The team is based solely on talent, but offers no toughness. IF we ever get good, that's the road we're headed down. But worrying about that is so far off.

Seeing how many games DP plays....that's all. There's no reason to think that they'll make the playoffs, or even be a decent team.

Excited to see Wang open up the wallet on UFA Day and the rewards it'll reap, just like every year. Mike Knuble, come on and hoist the Stanley Cup

The last two Octobers have been fairly decent, and frankly, that scares me.

Because everyone knows they aren't going to spend money this offseason. Which means we will have the same team next year as this season. Therefore, we will be just as bad.

I agree with you about free agency but I have a good feeling about the players already in the organization going forward from this point.

The determination of players like Tavares, Niederreiter, and even Cizikas is infectious. These guys are extremely competitive and it is going to be their team.

I do not believe that it is going to be an automatic two points for the other teams in the Atlantic. This year the Islanders beat Pittsburgh twice, Philadelphia twice, the Rangers twice etc. In that regard it's a step in the right direction considering the Islanders hadn't beaten Philly twice in a season since 2006-2007 when they played 8 times a year.

That is the same top 6 as this year, just switching Bailey for Grabner. If that is the case (it probably will be) prepare to be posting in a thread like this around this time next year. Why would you want that when the Isles finished last in the Conference in goals scored?

The difference between winning and losing is so small with the parity in the league.

Look at a team like Montreal, in the playoffs 5 straight years and last in the conference this season. Or Tampa Bay who were one win from being in the Finals last year.

It's possible to have a huge upswing or downswing from one year to the next.

I would look forward to the exact same kinda season we had this year, MINUS the one long losing streak we always have before the all-star break.

I'm hoping that the Frans line plays next season consistently like they did for the last couple weeks. Josh is in a contract year, Nielsen's stats have been great since his big contract, and Kyle is now a year removed from his MAJOR shoulder surgery. I think with the same top 6, all a year older, we will not be last in conference goals scored. Also, hear me out. Our defense had I believe 19 goals all year. Shea Weber and Erik Karlsson had 19 goals EACH. If we can land Dennis Wideman or Jason Garrison via UFA and pair him with Streit, sign a solid veteran like Johnny Oduya for the third pairing, and bring in one of our young PMD, those numbers will change significantly. This will also help our offense tremendously. Just imagine how much more time in the offensive zone we could possibly have if we have viable defenseman who don't clear the puck off the boards everytime they get a chance. I think your being a little too narrowminded.

I did forget how dreadful the D is offensively outside of Streit. Bringing in 1-2 experienced puck moving D would do wonders for this team offensively and defensively. Countless times the D would bang it off the glass blindly to the other team. The problem I have with that top 6 and landing a dman is "IF". Way to many ifs right now and until Okposo,Franz,Bailey, Grabner play a consistent 82 games they will be huge question marks and can not and should not be relied upon. Franz is included on this list due to his offense not his d.

It's pretty blatant if you watch the Isles. When Dovovan, de Haan, and Ness were up they made crisp passes up ice to hit one of our fowards in stride which allowed for a clear entry and sometimes even a mini odd man rush. This helped the offensive unit significantly.

significantly is an understatement. I have never in my life seen a team so bad in dealing with the puck down low in there own zone. We are not talking about fancy shmancy play here. Down low in your own zone is where you stick to the BASICS...the BASICS!!!!!! 3-4/6ths of our D could never do this.
Fixing that is a positive feed back loop. There are only 60 mins in each game... for every 1 minute less you are in your own zone is another possible entire minute you could be on offense... its a win win.
