Sabres at the WC

Figured we could keep a thread to monitor the WC invites. Obviously many of these names will not go because either a) they aren't good enough, or b) declining due to being banged up/fatigued.

CONFIRMED:
Sweden -- Enroth
Slovakia -- Sekera

DECLINED:
Austria (DI) -- Vanek (injuries)
USA -- Miller; Gerbe (originally named, pulled out with injuries)
Finland -- Leino

POSSIBLES:

USA: Kaleta, Leopold, Stafford, Pominville, Weber
Canada: Roy, Boyes, McCormick, Regehr, Ellis, Hodgson
Slovakia: Sekera

INJURED: Hecht, Myers, Ehrhoff, Ennis
FAMILY REASONS: Sulzer (I'd assume he would stay with his family and not go play for Germany)
AHL: Foligno, Tropp, McNabb, Brennan

Germany gets screwed by us here...

I could see Stafford going over if he's asked. He likely declined last summer because he didn't have a contract. But he's the type of guy I'd expect to see in that tourney. Maybe Gerbs, too.

I think Ennis could make it, but the team looks to be pretty stacked.
Hodgson has been good for Canada in the past but I don't think he's better than some of the others that will be available.
Roy has no place on the team and I hope Ruff isn't named coach, but unfortunately, he probably will be.

Roy will easily get a call, he has always said yes. Hodgson will likely get the call aswell. So many guys say no that those type guys get the call especially when the team is build around all skill guys so hodgson could be a depth player

Getzlaf and Stamkos are going, one has to assume that Tavares is going, and Benn, O'Reilly, RNH, Skinner, and Staal are all available.
All of those players are centers or are capable of playing center and all are better than both of those players right now.

Neither will be making it as a winger either, as Perry is going and Eberle and Nash will likely go.
I think E. Kane and Purcell should also make it, so there's your five of your six top wingers.
There are also other candidates like Glencross, Moulson, and Ryder available.
Hell, there's even Dany Heatley, Canada's all-time leader in goal scoring.
A number of the centers I named are effective on wing also, like Benn, Skinner, and Stamkos, so all your scoring wingers are more than taken care of.

Neither of them should make the team.

where did you find this? and who knows but in the past canada has always taken youth over prime aged players. Eberle went last season after a 40pt season along with a few other young guys. I would think at least one of Ennis or Hodgson will be in the tournament

Yeah, hopefully players start taking it more seriously.

If you're saying that you hope Ennis makes the US team, he's Canadian.

But yeah, the US has had some problems putting together teams lately.
The good players that are available usually refuse because no one knows about the tournament in the States.

He was injured in the SM-liiga playoffs and probably won't be healthy enough to even be considered.

Exactly, stars need to take this more seriously, the last few years Canada has iced pretty young rosters full of rookies and sophmores. Their defence was Pietrangelo(rookie), Gragnani(rookie), with many more young guys like schenn. Any chance USA ices a better roster or will guys like Gerbe be on it?

No **** Ennis is Canadian (see WJC teammates with Coho, Toharski, Subban, Myers etc) I was talking more so I hope he makes team Canada and if he does the USA is in even more in trouble, my statement was confusing but yeah I'm still so upset we aren't in the playoffs

Ehrhoff wants to play for germany. Like i heared he can be healthy till the tournament too.
Hope for Sulzer too. Some chemistry in the D would be really nice.
Hecht has retired. He wasnt very favored here.
Many have no clue about heockey here. They thought Hecht plays NHL so he had to score a ton of goals. They dont know the difference between a defensive forward and a sniper.

The German coach says both Ehrhoff and Sulzer are 50/50 right now.

I wouldn't blame the criticism of Hecht on a lack of hockey knowledge, he did underperform in the recent past. He still was an elite player at DEL-level, so there was no reason why he performed worse than DEL-players while playing for Germany. Not that I think he was particularly bad, that's only true for the last two tournaments. It's just that he only played those two tournaments in the past six or seven years, so he's going to be remembered by them.

Miller not going for the US.
For the second year in a row, Kessel is mysteriously injured.

None of the Canadian Sabres have been asked yet, which isn't good for their chances.
Confirmed so far: Bouwmeester, Eberle, Getzlaf, Kane, Ladd, Phaneuf, Skinner, Stamkos, Subban, Tavares, Ward

there is a (currently german only) article on his own homepage: http://www.thomasvanek.at/index.php?...9ef0651f37828a

the most significant part for his reason to decline the invitation translates to:

"First things first: I will not come to the Div-1 WC. It just does not make sense. I have too many small injuries and cannot help the team in my current shape: The chest hurts since january, my ankle is sprained and the shoulder is not great. At least no surgery is required, but i just need some weeks off the ice to heal everything."

So finally he speaks on his injuries.

No surgery is good news however.

That Canada team could compete with most olympic rosters.
