3rd Greatest NHL Goaltender of the Expansion Era?

With Roy winning by a wide margin at 73% with 78 votes cast and seemingly little change, I've decided to go ahead and post this 3rd ballot.

2nd Ballot
1st Ballot

1. Dominik Hasek
2. Patrick Roy

I'll now start posting the basics of the 5 poll options:

Martin Brodeur
1st in numerous career totals
4 Time Vezina Winner
3 Time Stanley Cup Champion

Bernie Parent
2 Time Vezina Winner
2 Time Conn Smythe Recipient
2 Time Stanley Cup Champion

Ed Belfour
Top 5 in numerous career totals
2 Time Vezina Winner
1 Time Stanley Cup Champion

Ken Dryden
5 Time Vezina Winner
1 Time Conn Smythe Recipient
6 Time Stanley Cup Champion

Tony Esposito
Retired 3rd All Time In Wins ( Most Among Expansion Era )
3 Time Vezina Winner

Voting Dryden. Short career, yes, and on a stacked team, but... ****, at least they didn't play the trap.

Jacques Lemaire and Larry Robinson learned the trap from Scottie Bowman on the 1970s Canadiens and brought it to NJ

Dryden

His peak is number 2 only to Hasek. Brodeur has longevity, but has never played at near the level of Dryden.

I voted Bernie Parent.

He hit the triple crown two years in a row. Nobody does that.

Back to back 12 shutout seasons as well.

Fantastic team, but tell me why I shouldn't vote for him?

I voted for Ken Dryden. Despite his short career of just 7+ seasons, he was an absolute force in those 7 seasons...as a key to those Stanley Cup-winning Habs teams. He could easily have won 400 games if he didn't see his hockey career as a stepping stone to a law career.

It was tough between Dryden and Brodeur...the latter of whom had a dominant streak of 13 seasons. The lengths of their careers are the absolute antithesis of each other - 397 games to 1191 games.

i don't think dryden's peak was better than parent's. probably not roy's, either.

why is brodeur's '07, for example, not close to dryden?

Thoughts on who to add in the 4th Ballot between Fuhr and Billy Smith?

Maybe Hextall?

Brodeur unarguably had the best career of any goaltender to ever play the game.

Roy:
3 Vezinas
4 Cups
3 Conn Smythes
0 Harts

Brodeur:
4 Vezinas
3 Cups
0 Conn Smythes
0 Harts

Please, tell me Brodeur was better because he has more regulation wins. I need a good laugh. Roy has 151 playoff wins, which is also a better winning percentage than Brodeur's playoff wins. Roy also played on some horrible, horrible Canadian teams.

when??

roy's habs were generally among the better teams in the NHL, were twice 2nd overall ('88, '89), had a losing record only once ('95).

even in '96, with thibault in net after roy was traded to colorado, habs were 8 games over .500 and made the playoffs.

people also love to claim he's the greatest ever without offering a shred of evidence

As a rookie, he carried the Habs to the cup in '86. Played on his head the entire '93 playoffs. Then Out played Marty in the '01 finals. Winning the Conn smythe all 3 times, and the only player to win 3. The teams he was on were great teams, but Marty played under the trap system, on one of the least penalized teams in the league, and behind HOF defensemen Stevens and Niedermayer. The Devils teams were also among the best in the East and League.

You should note for the vezina that until 1982 it basically was the Jennings (lowest GAA)

So Dryden's Vezinas would have asterisks

It's hard to play at Dryden's level when Dryden's level includes having Robinson, Savard and Lapointe on defense with Bob Gainey as a center.
