The big question: Which goaltender starts game 1?

I think Dineen has to make the biggest decision in his short NHL coaching career when he chooses which goalie starts the playoffs. Two and a half weeks ago, if you said anyone other than Theodore would start game 1 of the playoffs, you would been labelled crazy. But now that we've clinched and playoffs are around the corner, it's not so crazy. Dineen made a bold move putting Theodore back in the net in Washington. The message he sent with that move was that Theodore is his guy and this team needs him to be the guy. But things may have changed now that Clemmenson put together yet another outstanding performance. IMHO, the game against Carolina played out exactly like the game against Winnipeg. Only difference being we got the big save when we needed it. So the biggest question is... Who starts?

Clemmensen

Not only for being the hotter goalie but for the fact that he's never lost to the Devils (4-0-0), as well.

If we were playing the Rangers, I actually might've still said Theodore.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I agree. BUT, his leash will likely be as long as a Popsicle stick.

Yeah if he loses game 1, you go back to Theodore in game 2.

Hey everyone, Flyers fan here. Congratulations on your return to the playoffs and your division title as well. I think you have to show loyalty to the starter Theodore. He got you here, he deserves it.

Even if Clemmenson starts game 1, I guarantee you'll see Theodore again. This will take the pressure off Theo.

Theodore has been a lot more important IMO. And not just cause he's played in more games.

I was thinking about this during the last game and my thought was that if Clemmensen got the shut out he would get the start in game 1. However, that did not happen and I see us going with Theodore as the starter.

I bet Kevin Dineen flips a coin, I'd go with clemmensen game one but I also know how well Theodore has played the last month 1/2 aside from the past few games.

I've been to enough games to see clemmensen fall apart and Theodore play well to know you gotta go with the hot hand and who has the most confidence at the moment.

Clemmensen. I think Dineen will start Theodore though, reasons being:
  • He's our #1
  • It's the playoffs
  • Dineen will want Theo to "redeem" himself

clemmer, he's hot and confident. he's stolen games down the stretch. it's his former team and he's has played well against them. this would take some pressure of theo who has been lack luster recently. i believe this would benefit theo in the long run!!!
start clemmer!!!!!!

There's no single points in the playoffs.

Theodore for the season is 22-27
Clemmensen for the season is 14-12

Save percentages are nearly the same, with Theodore a couple of tenths of a percent better.

Last 11 games:

Clemmensen: 3-1
Theodore: 0-7

Jose Theodore has to be the starter. Who got you here? Nobody remembers that stretch in the middle of the season when Theodore played something like 15 games straight and was lights out? Remember the whole trade Clemmensen stage?

It's a tough call, but IMO you always go with your consistent number 1 over the guy who's been hot for 3-4 games.

My bold prediction is that theodore starts the first 1-3 games before they go to Clemmenson for the rest of the way.

If in December you told me that I'd be picking Clemmenson to start the game 1 of the playoffs, I'd call you nuts.

But I can't disagree with most of you. He's been the better goalie over the last couple months and he plays well against the Devils.

PLUS, there's no ****en shootout in the playoffs!!!

This is a telling stat. Theo has been struggling. The Winnipeg game was bad. We can't have goaltending like that in the playoffs.

It doesn't matter who got you here. Theo had a great season and should be given credit for it, but putting him in net when he's not your best goalie right now is foolish. The NHL playoffs are all about riding a hot goalie, and right now that goalie is Clemmer. Not to mention Theo has been pretty shaky in net his last two starts. When you add in Clemmer's record against the Devils, it's really a pretty easy decision.

What I think is possibly a bigger question is how can Tallon not bring back Clemmy after he has played so well. But Markstrom did play well in San Antonio GAA 2.35 SV% .927
