I could actually see NJ seeking him out. Sign for Low Cap hit. Gets mentorship from Brodeur who`s close to retirement. I think Gus is better than he is showing in T.O due to old school positional goalie coach. Look at all Leafs goalies this year trying to play Allaire`s strict positional way, and all of them getting beat high.

If he doesn't get resigned by Burke then this is where I would love to see him.

I think under Carlyle's system we could actually see Gustavsson flourish into a decent backup or #1B. Wilson screwed him up and bad.

To me he was grossly overrated
when he came into the league and will leave it due to never being able to prove he was anything more than a monster disappointment.

That's the best thing I've read so far. He's on a slippery slope to Europe if you ask me. Either that or some major mental therapy during the summer to help him recover from playing for Toronto. Someone signs him to a two way deal as a last chance to save his short career.

Leaf fans will have to admit that were it not for Jonas this team would have not even been close to a playoff spot.

I'd love to see him backup Hank.
I think he could be a better back up than Biron...

I'd love to see that as well, but I have zero hopes for it actually happening.

Gus should be an NHL:er though, and he probably will be. He hasn't met his potential in Toronto, but few goalkeepers do, so it's not all on him. 2 heart surgeries, his parents died and so on. With a better D, and some mental training, Gus will become an NHL-starter.

Gustavsson never really was that good in the SEL either, he had ONE (1, uno) season with best stats in the league but wasn't close to the best goalie, then he had one (1, uno) playoff where he basically didn't let anything in. The previous season he was in Färjestad's farm team in Sweden's 3rd league for much of the season.

But the story doesn't tell that he was on a completely dominant team that year (they let in 13 goals on 13 playoff games...), they laughed smugly through the regular season and burst out in hysterical laughter in the playoffs. There wasn't even a discussion. It wasn't even close. AINEC would've for once fit.

Like come on. I think at least 6 of that years SEL starters could've put up almost the same season. Never seen a team being that dominant and having that rock hard solid defense in the SEL in my 30 years. It'll never happen again. I'll say again, the team let in 13 goals in 13 playoff games. I mean, even with the SEL's worst starter that season the numbers would've been under 1.5 GAA most probably.

I think Gustavsson struggles to get a contract in the NHL, and if he does, he might not be guaranteed a spot in the NHL, but rather as a third goaltender.

Someone suggested Detroit, but why? They have Joey MacDonald who has accumulated similar counting stats to Gustavsson (yes, he is older and it was over a longer time frame).

Teams desperate for quality goaltending won't touch Gustavsson. Teams interested in a steady backup will shy away as well. So Gustavsson is a lottery ticket - if he wants to accept that challenge.

This is the way I see it.

If a team has a young guy that might need another year in the minors, then maybe they sign Gus to fill the gap. But there won't be many teams knocking on his door.

According to CBC, there's actually a bunch of NHL teams interested in Gustavsson because other GM's think he's been "mis-managed by the coaching staff" (that sounds kind of familiar...ah, the joys of being a Leaf fan).

You wouldn't happen to have a link to that?

Update*: Jonas himself spoke to Swedish media after being snubbed for our WC-squad and he says that he's determined to stay in the NHL, preferably in Toronto, but he had been told by Burke that the Leafs had yet to make a decision about him.
