I do not get the Petry hype AT ALL. Every time I watch him play he gets burned HORRIBLY 1-on-1, often numerous times per game. He seems extremely weak defensively, there must be something that I'm not seeing there, but I don't get what Oilers fans are excited about. You can try to write them off as rookie mistakes, but he's 24 years old and has played 108 NHL games, he shouldn't be responsible for such major defensive breakdowns on such a regular basis. He has some solid offensive talent, but seems like a total pylon on d. Gardiner by far for me.

I dont get the hype either.
Hes a mess defensively on many nights and he doesnt have great offensive upside. Sure Gardiner also makes some mistakes in his own end but at least he shows lots of stretchs of elite offensive play.

Then I would have to say you haven't seen him enough, or at lately. To be honest, he's probably one of the most improved defensemen over this past year (not a top defenseman...just most improved...). I agree he is not like a franchise defenseman or anything, but the guy has made huge strides, and I really think you are wrong about him getting burned 1-on-1. Over the latter half of the season, he was one of the best defensemen for the oilers along with smid.
That being said, even though I'm an oilers fan I cant vote for Petry. I just haven't seen enough of Gardiner to compare, but from what I've seen and read about him and what his stats say, he seems to be a fairly special young player. Will have to abstain from this vote.

At least he finished the season in a consistent manner
Oil fan saying Gardiner but it's really close. Gardiner jumps out more on the screen because he's more dynamic but Petry is more physical and is outstanding with his defensive stickwork so i would give him the edge defensively.
Long term, i would say that Gardiner has the higher offensive upside which tips the scale to him but it's a lot closer than Leafs fans will surely suggest.
You guys who say AINEC really need to watch Petry more. He was a stud in the second half of the season, i think that HF has this thought process that every Oiler Dman is meh or sucks which gets really irritating after a while.
Smid and Petry were basically on their own on the blueline, they were carrying the team as much as they could in the second half of the season with little help from the other blueliners except Schultz who has played well.

You're a good poster so i don't want to take you to task too much but you're way off on your assessment of Petry. He did get burnt a few times near the end of the season after coming back from injury but there was a good 30-35 game stretch before that when he was nearly flawless defensively. He struggled in the first part of the season but was a completely different player in the second half playing with Smid, it was quite remarkable to see his progression.
