Zetterberg (6.08) - #2C - RW
Third and fourth lines

Weber(7.5) - Lidstrom (6.2)
4 more defencemen

Lundqvist (6.875)

50.195 dedicated to 7 players and have 14M to fill 12 slots could be done but only until their ELC's end.

Here is the issue with how some are interpreting this comment by Strachan.

He does not mean 7 of the best ****ing players in the world on one team. Clearly this would not be sustainable.

He means a solid core of stars or very close to star players.

Hence the Leafs have

Lupul, Kessel, Grabo (close), Kadri (within next 1-3 years)

Phaneuf
(yep, he is no matter what you think. Let the guy play 22-23 minutes instead of 26 and we get to witness the almost PPG Dman who was very solid defensively for the first 40-50ish games this year. Poor guy just burned out during the season. Clearly is mental capacity cannot sustain such high levels for a full NHL season)

Gardiner (within next 1-3 years)

Notables:
Schenn, Reimer, Biggs, Franson, Kuli, Colborne, Ashton

All of the above have an outside chance of becoming a core star player.
It's likely most won't, but you have to think 1-2 will become that player someday, or be dealt in package that brings that type of player.

I understand if your using "star" players instead of the best players in the world BUT the OP said "elite" and for that we only have Kessel, Phaneuf & Lupul (maybe a notch below), Gardiner (it looks very promising), Kadri (have to see a full season or two before judgement is passed), and the rest all have the "POTENTIAL" but potential doesn't win you games.

I have this as my group:

Kessel

Grabo

Phaneuf

Realistically, Id like to see the blanks filled in by adding a top centre like Getzlaf, and possibly JVR.

In goal its either an older veteran to stabilize for a couple seasons while Reimer transitions, or you move Reimer in a package for a big name like Luongo.

Personally, I think you go with door number two, the more I think about it, and get a guy who wins you 38 games a year. Liles, once again, a step or two down from elite, but a reliable stopgap puck mover who can also shoot, until Gardiner becomes that guy.

JVR 4.25 Getz 5.325 Kessel 5.5
Grabo 5.5

Phaneuf 6.5
(Liles) 4.2

Luongo 5.3
Buuuuuut...Lupul is better than JVR and you want to replace him for the same money? I like everything else minus Liles because he was brutal when he came back. If he comes back and plays like he did at the beginning of the year than ya, it works - that would be a playoff team.

Im not going to debate the legitimacy of that blueprint. I am interested in how you all feel we could (realistically) use this model here in Toronto.
Al Strachan is the worlds smartest person.

It's Al Strachan. How did this make it to page 3?

Lupes is on an expiring contract. JVR is 6'3" and goes hard to the net and is locked in for a number of years on a very manageable contract.

Agree, Liles needs to rest his melon and get back to pre injury levels of brain activity...still room for Lupes in the roster, at least until the deadline, depending on our position in the standings.

Lupes isn't better, IMO he played better and stayed healthy longer. Not sure he's better going forward though--

So, you'd rather debate the legitimacy of the blueprint, as opposed to offer anything based on this template, despite the request in the O... K...thanks for contributing. Good stuff...
