Penguins led the league in man-games lost this year

Penguins overcoming injuries to rank among league leaders in points

The Pittsburgh Penguins entered this season expected to be among the best teams in the league, but they’ve been hit by injuries to a number of key players, leading the league in man-games lost to injury this season. Among the notable who’ve been sidelined: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal, Kris Letang, Tyler Kennedy, Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Losing players like that would usually be potentially fatal to a club’s playoff chances, yet thanks to their depth and the coaching of Dan Bylsma, the Penguins have overcome adversity to remain among the league’s elite. By mid-March, they were finally healthy (only backup Brent Johnson remains sidelined) and with all their best players now back in the lineup together, the Penguins could become the team to beat in the Eastern Conference.

It is almost hard to even remember when so relatively healthy now how much we overcame this year.

We actually did get most man games lost? i figured Calgary would. As we got healthy, they had 9 players out near the end of the reg season and were like 20 games behind us.

Despres is more of a notable then TFK

This has to help Malkin's chances to win the MVP.

definitely, if you read the comments in the Kharlamov Trophy article, many of the voters/players mentioned the injury situation.

That's an old article, from March 18th. I think Calgary at least passed the Penguins in man-games lost.

Also, the way man games lost are calculated isn't uniform which seems pretty ridiculous.

The whole "man games lost" thing could be misleading. It really needs to incorporate cap hit or performance in some way. I realize that Scott Gomez would skew the cap hit metric quite a bit, but it's infinitely more useful to know that you lost 130 games of top end talent instead of 130 games of Eric Christensen.

Fun fact : I also lead hockey pool in man-games lost. Wouldve been 1st if I was on par with the pool average

Here is some perspective on what we had to get through, players that missed at least 10 games:

Sidney Crosby - missed 60 games
Kris Letang - missed 31 games
Jordan Staal - missed 20 games
Z. Michalek - missed 20 games
Tyler Kennedy - missed 22 games
Arron Asham - missed 18 games
Dustin Jeffrey - missed 56 games

According to this assessment, the Flames were 1st with 401, while the Penguins were tied for 3rd with 377.

I wonder where Spector got his numbers from.
