I just feel like if a player of Grigs' caliber/potential falls to us, we can't pass. For the same reason I like to think we would have taken Couturier over a d-man if he would have fallen to us last year.
Olli Maata is projected to be a pretty safe pick. His midterm ranking was nice and only improved as the year went by. Olli has been rumored to possibly go in the top 10. I'd think that hes definitely top 15 material. He already has some very nice size, at 6.01 and 200 pounds. He has good body positioning, but he doesn't play a physical game. His offensive upside is questionable. Surprised you hadn't heard of him considering he has been a high projected pick all year.
I've heard of him - just not in the light that Derek portrayed.
I have him just missing the top-10 in my own mock draft. A solid two-way #3/#4 D with strong work ethic, and leadership skills sounds like he was tailor-made for the Wild.
When Couturier fell last year, wasn't it more because of other late risers like Huberdeau and Z-bad? I don't remember Couturier getting the same criticisms last year that Grigerenko is getting this year.
Agreed. Pouliot, despite the rankings, was a reach. He was drafted not on his actual point production, which wasn't that special, but of a projection of his skills, if he got stronger and played with more skilled linemates. Scouts saw his puck skills and went OMG this guy is going to score 50 goals, and blamed his lack of production on a bad team.
Grigorenko, on the other hand, as performed everywhere he's played.
This is absolutely false. Pouliot was the second best player in the draft and many, many of us wanted him.
The biggest problem I find is Grigs does have that Russian factor but I keep hearing that he continues to take plays off and while not lazy, just doesn't have the factor to be a grinder.

Lol. Well history was not on your side. Pouliot WAS NOT the 2nd best player in that draft. You were very much projecting on him if you thought he was going to be a guaranted superstar.
It was well known at the time that Pouliot could have just peaked at the right time. He was very much a risky pick.

Uh he was ranked as the 2nd best player for ISS and I remember distinctly when we got the pick, that's who the fans wanted. Personally, I wanted Kopitar but everyone was gushing about Pouliot because everyone thought he was going to be the offensive stud that was missing for a long time for this organization. The next Gaborik.
There were questions at the time if Pouliot peaked or if he was just scratching the surface of his abilities.
While he was a risky pick, he was definitely the 2nd rated player that year for NA behind Crosby. And I still remember getting bashed for saying it was a bad pick.
The problem with the Wild organization is we haven't had a lot of luck with guys that are missing the consistency or work ethic part of their game.
I wouldn't mind Grigs but knowing this organization, it's a higher risk pick and we still have holes to fill.
What's the farthest Galchenyuk will fall in your guys' opinions?
I would take him 2nd, cant see any possible way he gets past 6th. The Islanders are the only team in the top 6 that dont have a huge need for a top 6 center and even they could probably use one.

This I how I feel too. I just hope he doesn't make it to the Leafs' or Ducks' pick. That would suck missing on him by one measly point. Plus I wanna cheer for him. No way I could do that if he ends up in Toronto. I am thinking if CBJ doesn't take him, Montreal will.

I think Couturier fell because he wasn't great at anything. He was just all around a solid player, but didn't excel in anything

Yea, I should have re-worded. I thought you'd know more about him. He's a safe pick. But who knows if he has the offensive tools that we need.
I see the point you're making, but in this draft, comparing Grigs to any defender other than Murray, Grigs is clearly the one you take.
If grigs has those question marks to our scouting staff they won't take him. Character seems high on the list and work ethic is important too. Don't see us wanting that kind of guy if those descriptions are true.
I just think character issues is something you can fix over time. Especially if you bring him into a locker room like ours. Also if you take him and he continues to excel in the Q and he doesn't want to sign you can always trade his rights. I know we need defensemen but if we view it as a value you pick. You can almost assume he does another year in the Q and puts up wonderful numbers. He will keep his value and then from there you either sign him or ship him. And to go back to where I said we could get Maatta and Ceci, I meant we would have a possibility to land both. I should have clarified.
If grigs falls to us, we pick him or trade down. He will be a very good player.
others have said it, and I tend to agree that it sounds like folks are over analyzing grigs. I hope he gets analyzed right into the wilds prospect pool.
That said, I don't think he falls that far, and I hope we pick trouba.
