Kessel - (??) - Lupul
Mcarthur - Grabo - Kulemin 3
Kadri 1.2 - Bozak - ??
Brown - Steckel - ??

That leaves roughly 15 to sign 3 players, an elite first liner (6-7 mill + a goon for 4th line, leaving 8ish mill roughly for a couple more guys + room for trades).

Thoughts? What would you do?
What difference does it make? Except for Nash no one here knows who will be available for trades nor make it to UFA.

Why would any sane GM go with the same goalie tandem that couldn't get him where he wanted to go? Reimer is being kept, so Gus has to go and Burke will bring in another goalie. Perhaps somebody with more experience.

1. Keep our first round pick, draft either Galchenyuk or Forsberg.
2. Attempt to trade MacArthur and Franson for picks or prospects.
3. Attempt to re-sign Joffrey Lupul, if he wants too much money trade him while his value is high.
4. Sign Travis Moen and Josh Harding.
5. Prepare to tank for Nathan MacKinnon

Flyers fan coming in peace. I recall when the Flyers finished last, the immediate response was to get aggressive as anyone. They traded a first round pick just for the rights to Timonen and Hartnell and got them signed and then signed Briere. I think, no matter what, Burke or the Leafs next GM has to be more aggressive and bold.

I could be wrong but I believe this is what the "offseason" thread is for.

Again, I could be wrong.

My absolute ideal dream scenario, with some attempt made to keep things realistic:

Big moves:
1) Win draft lottery, draft Yakupov (100% luck based, and quite unlikely, but my fingers are crossed!)
2) Sign Schultz as a UFA (hope that he really wants to play with Gards)
3) Trade Schenn and Biggs for Schneider (I assume the Nucks will deal Schneider this summer, he's an RFA and I can't see him being happy staying behind Luongo. The Nucks are pretty stacked at all positions, but a big young dman and big young power forward would be two of their bigger needs)
4) Trade Kadri, Franson and Bozak for Stastny (the Avs have 3 top 6 centers in Duchene, ROR and Stastny. They're a young team with limited revenue, if one of these 3 is dealt I think it'll be Stastny, as he's the oldest with by far the highest salary. As a 2-way playmaker he'd be a great center for Kessel. This is a lot to give up, but you have to give to get, and the Avs main needs are for highly skilled wingers and talented dmen)

Small moves:
1) try to deal Lombardi and Army for literally anything, both have just 1 year left, might be a good "low risk" option for teams that have trouble attracting FAs. If they can't be dealt, waive them
2) try to deal Connolly *IF* we can sign a better #3 C, ideally someone like Chris Kelly. Otherwise just keep Connolly as the #3 C
3) try to deal Komi, if not possible just keep him

Lupul - Stastny - Kessel
Kulemin - Grabovski - Yakupov
MacArthur - Connolly/Kelly - Frattin
Crabb - Steckel - Brown

Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Schultz
Liles - Komi/Holzer

Schneider
Reimer

I'd model my team like the Vityaz Chekhov. I'd get 9 goons and overpay for a 1st line and a decent defense. Boom baby!

Maybe this is why I'm not a GM

The best possible scenario for leafs this offseason

Very unlikely Scenerio but just for fun

Win lottery: Draft Nail Yakupov (im reaching a little I know)

Trade MacArhur along with one of Connolly/Lombardi (cap dumps) for a 3rd to clear salary

Sign Zach Parise

Sign Justin Schultz

Sign Brandon Brust

Sign Hardin/Vokoun/Biron

buy out Armstrong

Waive Komisarek

Let Kessel play center (his playmaking is amazing and I always thought he was more suited for the C position then RW) - He would look like a Giroux type player at C (amazing mix of goal scoring and playmaking)

opening day Roster

Parise-Kessel-Yakupov

Kulemin-Grabovski-Lupul

Kadri-Bozak-Ashton/Frattin (whoever is better in training camp)

Prust-Steckel-Brown

Orr

Phanuef-Gunnarson

Liles-Schenn

Gardiner-Schultz

Reimer
Harding/Vokoun/Biron

Actually, its more like this

Force NHL to get rid of salary cap. Buy the Penguins from Mario. Combine the two rosters.

Pay back the money the Leafs wasted on him the past 4 years. It's the honourable thing to do.

The same Nonis who is Burke's hand picked right hand man/protégé.

Look at the nearest Stanley Cup contender that matches up with Toronto's squad and try to build towards that.

If they don't have that, trade and draft to become like that.

I think Burke has been overly aggressive and has replaced nearly every player on the roster within the span of 3 seasons. A rebuilding team trading two first round picks for a play for a player who, at the time, people thought couldn't put up points without Marc Savard passing him the puck is about as bold of a move as you can get.

Reimer/Scrivens

Wow

You have to be kidding. That's easily worse than any goalie tandem in the NHL. They need to fix the problem between the pipes not add to it.

Yeah the team needs a new GM not Nonis. Nonis is completely tied into Burke. Why retain him. Ridiculous we can have another 5 years of Nonis?

You could likely find someone to take every one of those players. Komi might be a bit more difficult depending on what he does with his NTC, but he could be moved. It just depends on what you expect back. BB got Lups and Gardiner for Beauch. He wouldn't get anything close to that for any of those. However he wouldn't have to waive them. Someone will take a chance on TC, Lombardi & Armstrong as they're all in their final year.

What I'd do

Hey All,

Might be a little much, but these would be the moves I'd try and make:

1) Sign Michael Leighton to a 1 year deal at 1.3 million.

He's a proven player at the NHL level, helped the Flyers to the cup a few years back, and has put up decent numbers his last two years in the AHL. He's an experienced player that should complement Reimer nicely. Leighton could play 25 - 30 games, leaving Reimer around 50 - 55 games.

Hopefully Leighton's experience could help Reimer when he struggles. I still like Reimer for a number one.

2) Trade Phil Kessel and Matt Frattin for Jordan Staal and Ben Hanowski.

Leafs pick up their number one centre but give up their top goal scoring and also a potential top six forward down the road. Pens get an elite player for Crosby (they'd be magic together) who doesn't have to be the centre of attention. They also get a third liner that can step up making their depth deeper.

Leafs also pick up a big forward who is still a few years away.

3) Trade Tyler Bozak and 2nd Draft Pick for Brendon Morrow

Leafs pick up Morrow, although his best days are behind him provided some added leadership to the leafs that has been sorely missing. Morrow is still a top six forward who competes hard, and sets an example on the ice. I'm a huge fan of Morrow and I believe that he would make a massive difference in the locker room.

Stars pick up a centre who can play at the 2nd/3rd slot and a draft pick to continue their mission to getting younger.

Stars are rumoured to be moving Morrow over the summer, so I believe that a fit could work for the leafs. Maybe not this deal, but something similar.

4) Trade Matt Lombardi, Clarke MacArthur and Stuart Percy for Cal Clutterbuck

Although Lombardi hasn't had a ton of successful in Toronto, he's proven he's able to return from his serious concussion. This was something no one expected to see. A few years ago he was considered a top free agent for his offensive abilities. MacArthur provides more offensive help, as well as some of the grit that is being lost with Clutterbuck, though not to the same extent.

The Wild get a chance to improve their offensive output and also pick up a former 1st draft pick. Minnesota are last in GF so this gives a chance to bounce up their offensive output.

Leafs get Clutterbuck who fits in the Caryle system and provides the kind of grit we love to see and desperately miss. Also a good ol' Ontario boy.

5) Sign Travis Moen

Leafs get bigger, and tougher. Moen is similar with Burke and Caryle's system playing a crucial role in the cup success with the Ducks as part of the shut down line. He helps the Leafs get tougher, and is a realistic signing in my opinion.

Our D stays the same as I don't see Komo going anywhere, and I actually still like our D on paper. I just think they need a little more structure and some trust in their goaltending.

So my ideal roster looks like this:

FORWARDS
Joffrey Lupul ($4.250m) / Jordan Staal ($4.000m) / Brenden Morrow (A) ($4.100m)
Nazem Kadri ($1.720m) / Mikhail Grabovski ($5.500m) / Nikolai Kulemin ($2.200m)
Travis Moen ($1.900m) / Tim Connolly ($4.750m) / Cal Clutterbuck ($1.400m)
Colby Armstrong ($3.000m) / David Steckel ($1.100m) / Mike Brown ($0.737m)

DEFENSEMEN
Dion Phaneuf (C) ($6.500m) / Mike Komisarek ($4.500m)
John-Michael Liles (A) ($3.875m) / Luke Schenn ($3.600m)
Carl Gunnarsson ($1.325m) / Jake Gardiner ($1.117m)
Cody Franson ($1.210m) /

GOALTENDERS
James Reimer ($1.800m)
Michael Leighton ($1.300m)

Will any of this happen? Probably not... but hey at least it's fun to post my own thoughts. I do see Moen and Morrow as being high chances of arrival. Everything else is a little bit of a long shot.

Thanks for reading!

Wait...why would Franson be getting $2.25 M next season lol?

That lineup isn't doing anything to get into the playoffs. Schultz is pretty bad nowadays, he was never more than a 4th dman to begin with.

I'd try to sign Harding or Chris Mason as backups/potential starters.

I'd try to sign Jackman or Brad Stuart or Wideman as dmen (Wideman isn't that good defensively but at least he can make a PP contribution which Liles/Gardiner/Franson might do so Jackman is the ideal defensive dman here). Bryan Allen might be a cheaper option.

And I'd go hard after signing a winger in terms of Semin or Jones or Hudler.

Would try to go for McClement or Gaustad for the 3rd/4th line centre and McClement is great on the PK.

But all of this is moot unless one or both of Parise/Semin are signed via "cap circumvention" whatever that means.
