I think they said Loui-Roy-Jagr is the new top line with Benn gone.

Yeah just noticed:

Quote:
Mark Stepneski ‏@StarsInsideEdge

Forward lines: Eriksson-Roy-Jagr; Whitney-Wandell-Ryder; Morrow-Fiddler-Nystrom; Garbutt-Eakin-R. Smith
Good opportunity for Wandell ... probably not many left. If he can make a good impression now, maybe he can be a winger with Eakin assuming Morrow potentially sticks with Fiddler.

Lines per Stepneski:

Eriksson-Roy-Jagr
Whitney-Wandell-Ryder
Morrow-Fiddler-Nystrom
Garbutt-Eakin-R.Smith

Interesting to see Wandell on the 2nd line. If Benn is still without a contract by the start of the year only thing i'd change is swap Fiddler and Nystrom for Eakin and R.Smith.

Very strange lines.

It's the first day of camp and I don't want to read too much into it, but I see a potential conflict brewing between Joe and Gulutzan over which line is the 3rd and which is the 4th. Joe obviously intends for Fiddler/Nystrom to be on the 4th but as we've seen Gulutzan is going to favor veterans over young players so I'm not sure that's realistically going to happen. Putting Morrow with them is a signal that he sees that as the 3rd line.

Agreed with pique on the 3rd/4th line dilemma.

Did anyone make it out? Any thoughts on the players? Faksa/Ritchie?

i was there today. things i noticed...

* larsen played uber-physical. shoved r smith around alot.

* jagr. is. good. like at everything (offensively). always appreciated his shot, strength, and length, but i'm most impressed by his hands. he seriously has the fastest long-distance dekes i've ever seen.

* nilstorp (what happened to the "h"?) plays southpaw (or whatever equivalent hockey goalie term is). reading about stars' possible motivation to have him back-up vs bachman, it made me wonder what the hardest adjustment is for skaters... goalies of different sizes or different handed-ness?

* at the end, they did a shooting drill where skaters receive passes at the blue line and wind up to shoot. most ripped slapshots, but ritchie only shot wristers and snappers... like really, really hard.

* can't comment on faksa too much. seemed to fit in fine with the nhl guys though. didn't look out of place. same can be said for the other young guys imo (ritchie, r smith, roussel, dillon, benn).

Heika's got an interesting article up, interviewing Gully about the line combos:

http://starsblog.dallasnews.com/2013...n-pencil.html/

Quote:
The original plan was to have Benn with Eriksson and Jagr, so you could easily see Benn dropping into that top line spot when he is eventually signed and then moving Roy to the second line. And, if Benn isn’t signed by the season opener, then you want Roy playing on the top line. So that takes care of those problems.

Having Wandell play up so high is a great sign for him. He has scaled up to the second line before without much success, but he was playing 20 minutes a game in Russia, and has been playing in all situations there. He had 2 goals and 7 assists (9 points) in 26 games played with Severstal Cherepovets, and said he felt like he was creating scoring chances. He could stick in the second line spot or he could slide down to the fourth line and allow Cody Eakin a chance with the big guns. Eakin was second on the Texas Stars in scoring with 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points.

Many felt Eakin might center a third line with Brenden Morrow, but Gulutzan seems to be leaning on his veterans to get extra minutes. Vern Fiddler is a competitor, so maybe Gulutzan gets some of the lost grit out of a line that combines Fiddler and Morrow with Eric Nystrom.

That leaves an interesting mix on that fourth line. Reilly Smith is the Texas Stars’ leading scorer, and he and Eakin had solid chemistry there, so it will be interesting to see if that means Smith is sticking around for the NHL season. Antonie Roussel seems a more likely candidate, but like Gulutzan said, this is all written in pencil.
Talks about how things will change, and the D-pairs as well.

whoa. What was all that talk about how Fiddler and Nystrom were misused last year? I thought they were locks for the 4th line..

It's kind of strange how often Gulutzan does the exact opposite thing that you hear from other people in the organization.

We've got a burgeoning Ron Washington dynamic here where the GM will have to purge all of the coach's favorites regardless of whether they could be useful in their proper roles to stop him from making the wrong choices.

The GM strongly insinuated Fiddler and Nystrom were 4th liners by saying the moves in the off season allow them to be slotted better (the only place to go from the 3rd line is the 4th line), and the owner flat out called them 4th liners before correcting himself and saying it wasn't his place.

Or does it not sound more like Tippett a few years ago all over again?

Don't really feel optimistic about Wandell based on those KHL numbers if used as some sign for 'turning the corner.' That's pretty bad for playing 20 minutes a game.
