I didn't think it was possible to whine more than Crosby and the Penguins but this guy does. And now he's trying to 'explain' his rant from last week too:

http://blog.nj.com/njv_guest_blog/20...ils_owner.html

Quote:
I’ve never publicly criticized someone as I did Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek last week. To some, this seemed out of character, especially because I’m one of those who believe the over-the-top way we talk to each other in our democracy often undermines our ability to solve complicated problems and advance toward common aspirations. Thus, I feel I owe it to our community to further explain why I believe my comments were warranted.

My anger isn’t simply about the arbitrators’ decision. The courts will eventually decide the revenue dispute and hopefully rectify what was never anyone’s intention: that the city should be paying more to Vanderbeek than Vanderbeek is sharing in direct revenue with the city. Instead, my outrage with him is centered on the public commitments he made to our city.

Booker just as quickly added a dig at the Devils, doing nothing to change the perception that the decision to pull the police was anything other than payback. "It would be nice to have more revenue from the arena so we could have hired more cops," the mayor said. "We believe that the Devils should be stepping up like other arenas in the region to provide security for their fans."
WTF?!

So he's pulling back police from the arena out of protest...he better hope the 'element' of Newark nobody wants to acknowledge doesn't take advantage of it. How's that going to play pr-wise, especially if something happens during the postseason?

Dude, a SWAT team isn't needed on Mulberry Street. There's already a police tower and a mobile unit 24/7 on Broad by Market. All you need is a cop car in front of the arena, a couple of cops directing traffic, and maybe a couple of patrols further out from the arena. Sorta like Verizon Center. There's no need for 20-30 cops with most of them doing nothing. The cameras will do it for them.

If the Devils want a buttload of security on 4 measly blocks at best, they should pay for it, which I thought they were.

Newark is responsible for security around the arena as it is public thoroughfares and within their jurisdiction. Should something happen with the element, this may be one of the few instances where a city has set itself up to lose on a dispositive motion in a negligent security case!

But then the arena would be all empty seats because of the fear.

Oh wait, nevermind.

Seriously though, my Ragometer is beeping heavily on this Booker guy.

It's not like the police were doing a good job directing the traffic anyway, so whatever. I just wish they would keep this behind closed doors. I don't care what's going on behind the scenes and it's not my job to decide who's right/wrong.

Figure it out behind closed doors and leave it out of the media.

I don't get the massive support for Vanderbeek. The guy clearly lied about many things that the arena would bring and hasn't paid up. He's running a team that's in debt and it's clearly showing now.

Booker has a right to be pissed because the arena and it's impact on Newark isn't that impressive.

Yeah I mean, I guess without the arena, Newark would still be the same old crap hole it is. Move along..nothing to see here folks!

In the meantime, I tweeted at Cory Booker and he DM'ed me...I can't respond to him though because he doesn't follow me.

We're reacting to Booker's intentions more than what he's actually doing.

Which is fine, but some people on here act like the arena is surrounded by housing projects. It's not in a bad area to begin with. If people know where they're going they should be fine.

Yeah it's definitely a safer area, but people still have that Newark stigma.

He tried to claim that police force had been scaled back before all the nonsense. Yeah and politians aren't dirty ******* liars.

No respect for him now. None. Not saying VBK is blameless, the whole situation sucks, but Booker could be a grown up and handle this like one, instead he's acting like a child.

There's 3 sides to every story, Booker's side, JVB's side, and the truth! We'll never know what the last one is...

agreed! I always park in the garage adjacent to the building and on Saturday I was back on 21 quicker than ever, with less cops around. go figure!

that being said, this whole thing reeks of unprofessionalism. I know bettman and co have no business butting in- does anyone? to say ‘shut up or we’re fining you!’? its that g-d freedom of speech. buncha hippies
