As expected, Vauclair is out of the team. Two other players will be cut before the tournament.

from the thread "swiss young guns" a few months ago:

a quote from Jonas2244:

Hiller, Conz, Genoni

Streit - Diaz
Sbisa - Josi
Blindenbacher - Weber
Von Gunten

Wick - Ambühl - NiederreiterBrunner - Monnet - S.Bärtschi
Sprunger - Lemm - Romy
Déruns - Berger - Simon Moser
Gardner

Maybe: Lötscher, Trachsler, Savary (both strong defensive Centers), Du Bois, Hirschi, Stephan

half way there.... good call man!

In this case, prepare yourself for a hard time if Switzerland misses the quarterfinals

Sprunger didn't play in the third period after he hit the ice with his head. Hope it is not so serious.

So, what did everyone think about that next to last exhibition game?

I thought the offense performed as expected, though I'm not sure Rüthemann is a good fit on the Sprunger-Monnet line. On the other hand, the fourth line made a good case for themselves, especially Plüss.

On defense, I think the Du Bois - Bezina pair should have less responsabilties. I've always seen Du Bois as a depth player at this level, and I've never liked Bezina (what was that last minute play?). It's also a bit of a waste to play two defensemen with good offensive instinct such as Seger and Von Gunten with the fourth line.

An other thing I didn't like is the power play. I would prefer a system which gives more passing options rather than putting pressure on the net so early. I would also like to see specialised units rather than the normal lines, it felt a bit strange to see Du Bois, Sbisa and Bezina getting so much PP time with Seger, Blindenbacher and Von Gunten on the bench.

Totally agreed for the 4th line, not just for the goal but in general it was a really good checking line.
I liked the Moser-Romy-Brunner 's line, for me it was the best scoring line today...
For the defense, i didn't like Sbisa... Too much give away and some strange decision (For example when he got hit by P.K. Subban). But I didn't notice that Bezina and Du Bois played bad at even strenght but our PP was awful. Streit was okay but the other... I didn't understand why Monnet or Ruthemann weren't in PP when the other combination didn't work.

Berra was a rock... but i don't know why, i think Stephan will be as good as him tuesday. Still making a 1st goalie choice difficult...

You cannot expect that the PP works in the first game. I think the Streit-Sbisa, Wick-Ambühl-Nino line might work quite well, they need surely another game and some training.

I actually think Bezina played quite well, until this one play before the end.

I think we may have seen the offensive lines, no need to change much. I hope Sprunger is ok, otherwise Bieber would probably fit quite well between Rüthemann and Monnet. The first two lines are set in my eyes.

Did you notice that Romy probably won every single faceoff he played? Trachsler is great, no scorer, but just a very good 4th line center.

And Brunner is just great, didn't score but he made so much progress. The pass to Moser in the first period was great and you could see in other scenes how skilled he is.

So Grossmann is out and probably Liniger or Hollenstein (or Sprunger if it is serious).

Not really, they expect them to play longer
If one gets kicked out, they might ask them if they would like to come
Last year they decided that weber will not come in the middle of the tournament (team spirit and not enough time to gel)

I agree we can't expect the PP to work, but my complain was mainly against the system and the players used.

I think Monnet wouldn't fit well with Bieber and Rüthemann. Why not switch him with Moser?

Because Moser fits very well with Brunner and Romy.

Good point

I guess it bothers me a bit to have Moser with our best offensive player, even though it seems to work well. Regarding Monnet, he is more efficient if used with offensive players, and Rüthemann works well when used with good defensive players who can create turnovers.

On the other hand, there must be a reason why Simpson is the guy in charge and I'm only a poster on a message board

I'm not a fan of Monnet playing Center, his lack of footspeed and puckhandling-skills scares me...

a bit more leg strenght would suite Brunner pretty well, especially for smaller Ice Rinks in NA, was a bit unlucky, but looked good nonetheless.

Sbisa's puckhandling yesrterday hopefully isn't an indicator for the next 3 weeks.

Bezina hopefully gets used to the international rhythm asap, looked lost out there, as I've not seen him in intern. play for quite some time.agree with you guys, who wanna cut his playing time (still the 2nd Best PP-Defender on this team IMO before von Gunten, Blindenbacher or Sbisa)

4th line looked good as some mentioned. and it's nice to have a guy like Rubin on this line, who's one of the best swiss finishers.

Wick lookes much better than all season, nice to see. have to take my words back, I've written a few days ago about him.

On T.V. it looked like Sprunger didn't got hit when he slamed his head on the ice, but it was more of an uncontrolled evasive manoeuvre that he wasn't able to land properly didn't look out of place beside that.

looking forward to Kloten on tuesday, somebody else there?

Yeah, I will be there too, I also think Monnet is not a great Center. Would be better a line Monnet Liniger Sprunger. For me Rüthemann is the odd man. I would also see that the best goalscorer would play powerplay. If Sprunger have to play fourth line minutes without powerplay and Monnet as Center, than Stv has right and we can play without him.

According to the Tagi the Monnet-experiment didn't work out and if possible he won't play Center.
Tomorrow we'll see Hollenstein-Liniger-Bieber. Also Grossmann will play.

And as Phoenix is already up 2-0 Josi could still be a topic. If Phoenix goes through last game is in the night from Friday to Saturday, Josi would miss the first two games.

Not surprising, I remember when in 2008 Krueger started the tournament with Reichert - Monnet - Sprunger and Sannitz - Jeannin - Déruns, and after two games he switched Sannitz and Reichert to put Monnet on the wing.

Makes me wonder if Monnet could end up being the odd man out? What about a Hollenstein - Bieber - Rüthemann line?

Regarding Josi, this would be a best case scenario, but with Nashville having two home games, I would count on a sweep. The defense doesn't worry me anyway, I would prefer to add a forward to that group.

I have to say I do admire the Skills of Swiss and their peformances at the 2006 & even more so at the 2010 Olympics, but the Swiss are not very good at the Shootout, at all. You guys would've won against Canada in 2010 but shootout was awful.

And they play better on Small-Ice Hockey than Big Ice (beat Canada in 2006, Shootout loss in 2010, held USA to 1-0 in the quarterfinals also in 2010 until the Empty Net goal by Praise.

But for 2012 (& 2014) with Big Ice with Russia, Sweden, Finn's etc... going to be very difficult, it's their Specialty.

The 2006 Olympics were played on big ice, but I agree with your point, Switzerland's game works better on the small ice.
