Guys no offense but we are talking about .6 Billion dollars in construction and development in the SHED which is massive and for some reason a few seem stuck on vagrants? I realize this is something people seem to like to discuss so knock yourself out but as you fixate on the guy asking you for money maybe lift your eyes to see the 1200 new parking stalls, Met conversion, 2 hotels, two office towers, casino and shark club, street scraping, lighting, sidewalks, funnelators, massive convention centre expansion plus plus......it's going to be a fun ride
It's a pretty crazy amount of development going on downtown relative to what I've seen in my lifetime in Winnipeg, which is to say very little. With the return of the Jets and the news of downtown revitalization that has followed, it's actually an exciting time for Winnipeg. As a young person I'd like to speak for ALL young people and say that I've never been more hopeful for the future of this city.

yea this is a pretty important post. It hasn't been lost on me (old Fart) this year that when I walk into games and I see the waves of 18 to 25 year old fans (men and women) rolling in just how much the Jets return means to the young people from both a pride and entertainment perspective.
The Development that is going on in the SHED will be providing allot of jobs short term in construction then permanently in the service sector when the projects are done. These type of jobs get a knock but they are vital in the food chain of an economy......they often provide first jobs to young people, scheduling flexibility to single moms, secondary earnings into households, management careers, great jobs for students. On top of it take a project like the Stantect-Alt development......the paper is reporting it is a $75 million dollar project and that would be about accurate. Stanctec is a massive billion dollar company based out of Edmonton and the Alt group is a hotelier company based out of Quebec. In both cases they will be using funds from outside Winnipeg to build "in" Winnipeg. So much like exports (Which are sooooooo sexy to economists and governments because they bring in outside dollars) this $75 million will be flowing in and much of it will be captured by the local labor force and services that provide support to the project. also this type of development in the SHED will be creating close to 1000 permanent jobs in the area which gives people more reason to live and work downtown which in turn drives demand for housing and services to the area.
Also having the Jets back and lots of new things happening in our town combined with low unemployment means there are lots of reasons for young people to stay put as opposed to moving to other provinces........this should help key retention and help population growth via reduction in migration rates which in turn spurs development.
Why would you even say this? How disrespectful can you be?
If you've been reading my posts in this thread and can't tell that my tongue is firmly planted in my cheek, I can see how this reaction would be normal.
Besides, it's not like they don't get paid - a bottle of Red Rose goes a long way.
Its funny reading the comments in that article. People should really go to other bigger cities if they want to see what alot of homeless people on the streets really look like
The upgrade Im most looking forward to .....is when they remove the seat infront of me and install a LCD Tv and self serve bar .....Might as well take the seat next to that one out also and put in a urinal for me while they are at it
The suburbia mentality is alive and well on the HFB
The "unsavoury" elements of downtown is always a natural discussion point when discussing development there, but that's not the primary topic of this thread.
What I find completely ridiculous about the MTS centre is the number of doors to get out of the upper deck. There are total of 8 single doors to for 7,000 to leave the building.
If there was ever a fire, pretty much everyone would die. It takes 10 minutes to get out of upper deck because of the door bottleneck.

There's actually 12 doors (North and South).
Not to mention the 6 Fire Exits (which also make a great post-game exit, as you won't be scanning to get back into the building)

Well, those that don't take note of the fire exits are doomed to go down with the ship in the event of the worst.
Kinda Darwinian, but it'd thin out the herd a bit.
Don't you think the arena is big enough you could sit and watch the fire for a while before you had to leave? Like the Zamboni could explode and what else would burn in a concrete and steel building?

I work with a subcontracting company and you would not believe the amount of work that's being bid nowadays for downtown. It's literally the most excited I've ever been for our city...SO much stuff that is just getting pushed ahead because of the success of the Jets.

This is what people might not get Samcanadian
putting together a deal for even a small space can take 12 months (lease or deal negotiation, design, permitting).......the amount of development we are talking about is REALLY significant!!
The SHED area will be cool to see come to fruition but I am also looking forward to the spin off in housing and other areas I don’t even know about…………if you look at all that is happening around the U of W………..then go down where the new Red River college is being built by the Kings Head………over to the forks for the Museum …….then up to the SHED you are talking about major change.
Indeed it's just as you've said. Everything is starting to gel. East and West exchange (a lot of condos/apartments being renovated/built) and the RRC Campus, Downtown, university area, rapid transit, the Forks developments, it's all starting to go full steam ahead after years of being stalled. It's good to see. Even the convention centre might actually become worthwhile again.
This isn't exactly a MTS Centre upgrade as much as an enhancement to my game day experience.
I sit in the southeast corner of the 300 level and park my car at Winnipeg Square, so after the game I take the south end doors walk thru the second floor of City Place, then take the skywalk along Graham to get to Winnipeg Square.
When you get to the doors entering the Library there's the same busker there after every game. As far as I know, the guy only knows one song; Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire. A decent song and a decent rendition of it. Problem is it gets a little repetitive. The guy has just got to mix up his set a little. Maybe we can start a collection and buy the guy some sheet music so he can expand his repertoire for next season.

I love that guy, his ability to always be playing the chorus is amazing. I've never stood there long enough to hear what happens once the chorus ends, does he just start it over again? Either way, my game day experience is actually enhanced by him playing ring of fire. Whenever there is a different busker I'm a little disappointed.

I usually park in the Convention Centre and I know exactly the guy you are talking about.

I'm pretty sure I heard him playing a different song one time.
I parked in Portage place and there was a reasonably talented women busker singing a few times.....also when you entered the MTS centre foyer there is always the band tucked into the corner on the way to the main entrance.
Then on the way out there was the 300 levek rowdies yelling leafs suck Which I enjoyed

His song is usually a portent of doom by the time I get home after drinking that "beer" they serve in the 300s.
I cannot wait for the SHED and all the other new and exciting downtown facelifts. I had a blast going to games this year and spending some time downtown. Yes I am a suburb dweller and I gotta tell you my opinion of downtown has changed and now with SHED and other facelifts - I say bravo to the entrepeneurs who are bringing some much needed life to this area of our city.

Nope, just Ring of Fire in a lower voice...
And as for the suggestion of sheet music, I'm pretty sure he can't read the sheet music. It seems like he found a guitar one time learned how to play a chord and strums that while singing Ring of Fire loudly.

I'm fairly certain the performer you speak of is "Eric the Great".
He often busks through the exchange when theirs events on at the Burt, and used to be a regular in front of the LC on Osborn.
He's a nice guy but a little not quite right.
I have heard him play other songs and he's actually performed a couple legitimate shows in venues.
..But he certainly does seem to play the first verse and chorus of ring of fire 9 times for every other one song. Maybe just ask him next tim eto switch it up a little.
