Ron Francis, Director of Hockey Operations for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Brian Dumoulin (DOO-moh-lihn) to a three-year, entry-level contract. At the NHL Level, Dumoulin will receive $700,000 in 2012-13, $725,000 in 2013-14 and $800,000 in 2014-15. At the AHL level, he would be paid $67,500 in all three years. Dumoulin receives a signing bonus of $270,000, and will immediately join the Hurricanes’ top minor-league affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL).
From the sounds of the interviews yesterday it sounds like JR's plan is for Dumo to be in Charlotte for the majority of the season, with late season callups if needed if the Canes are in good playoff shape or out of the playoff picture.
Amazing thing is that he's a Junior at 20, most Juniors at the NCAA level are 21-23 depending on when they started. So that plays into our hands with his ELC being the full 3 years instead of just 2.

Because he's only 20 he doesn't burn a year of his ELC by playing in Charlotte this year?
I think it has to do with how old the player is at the start of their contract rather then the time they signed their contract so I was a bit off with that.
18-21 means their ELC is for 3 years
22-23 means it's for 2 years
24 means it's for 1 year
and 25 and up there technically is no limit.
so since Welsh turns 24 by the end of his contract (this season), he could only be signed to a 1 year deal. But since Dumo is 21 at the start of his contract, it's a 3 year deal. Confusing as hell I know.

Thanks for the clarification. So that's why Welsh is a RFA now since he could only be signed to a 1 year ELC and played in the last game.
welcome aboard! get those feet moving quicker and we'll see you soon. he would be a shoe in for injury call up next year. i think jr's love for murphy would have dumo behind him in the pecking order, we'll see how that all plays out.
So what is the consensus of some of the board members on Dumoulin? I've been very high on him since his freshman year, but want to know what others think (not in terms of how fast he'll make it, just where you think he'll end up).
He has a lot of qualities to be an outstanding defender and about the only knock I've seen from him is quickness in his footwook. From what I've seen, he is smart, has a winning culture, while he doesn't deliver bone shattering checks, he uses his body and long reach very well, moves the puck well, skates fairly well once he get's moving and has decent offensive skills.
What player most resembles who you think he'll potentially reach. (Not saying he'll reach it, more looking for style of play and his ultimate potential)?
hes got a great pedigree, my only problem with him is the skating. he actually is kinda graceful with his swooping turns - he looks like he is doing it right, it just looks so....deliberate. not a lot of quick twitch starts and stops or readjustments. to be fair i havent watched him nearly enough this year to see how much its improved - it could be much better. this i what separates him from being top 4 vs a role player to me. if he finds a way to be octopus like hal gill, he doesnt need to get quicker to be effective. you can adjust positionally like allen does pretty well, or gleason doesnt. guys get past this, we will see how it goes. he has every thing else. a quicker shot would be nice too, but i dont know that he needs it for his role.

@ice_chip "Dumoulin says he was 6-3, 195 as freshman. Now 6-4 and 225. Says stronger and also better positionally".
I was always surprised at how absolutely huge he was compared to the competition when I watched him at BC. I'm not surprised that he's grown a little and filled out his frame.
How about his awkward exchange with Justin Faulk? With the obvious friction between Skinner and Staal, the last thing we need is sexual tension between Dumoulin and Faulk on the blue-line.

Yeah, I saw that on twitter too. It reminded me of this uncanny resemblance:
