Now that EDM has 1st overall what kind of defenseman could these players get us?
This should be ugly.

HF has been so unintentionally funny tonight.
Look, whatever you guys CAN get for these two won't be much of an improvement over what you have. MPS is...I'm not calling him a bust, but he's fallen short of expectations to say the least. No team is gonna give up more than a third pairing d-man for him. Gagner is way too streaky and inconsistent to be worth all that much.
There are a few d-men out there who haven't quite worked out for their respective teams and are hogging up a lot of cap that I think the Oilers could potentially get if they really wanted to push for it.
Jay Bouweemester, Paul Martin, Keith Ballard ... bigger question is would the Oilers want to trade within their own division.
Honestly they should focus first IMO of Justin Schultz. There are some suitable UFA d-men out there too and the Oilers have cap room. Bryan Allen or Wideman would really help fortify the Oilers back end.
I think the Oilers should just sign a guy like Bryan Allen, make a hard push for Justin Schultz, and if that's all there is, then so be it.
Gagner's value could rise a lot leeching points off Yakupov + Hall for example in the interim. When Sam gets hot ... he really gets freaking hot, so just wait for his next hot streak.
I don't believe Phoenix should consider trading Yandle.
Shoud consider trading and actually trading are two different things. Yandle could bring in a pretty good amount of talent up front if Yotes decide to move him, solely considering the fact that there is a severe lack of top pairing defensman on the market and their depth at that position.
Oilers keep Gagner because Hall and Eberle are too good in their current roles to move to centre and they have no one to play 2nd line C unless they bring Horcoff back into that role. (he did have 16 pts in 22 games before he got demoted to the third line when Gagner returned).

Not enough coming back to the Oilers. Pretty much all the scouting services agree that there is a fair sized gap between Yakupov and everyone else in this draft.

Please try to keep the 1st Overall trade ideas in that thread. Thanks.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!
Wasn't Derick Brassard your 1st line C? Gagner doesn't sound so bad anymore now does he?
Yes and 31 pts over his last 44 games is a very respectable clip. You may not realize that he was in the press box and playing on the 4th line while Arniel was coach. After Richards took over he began to play like a top 6 player again.

His point production is fairly consistent. 49,41,41,42,47? At the age of 22 still younger than many players entering the NHL. He has to have some value although not a lot.
How is it not? There are 6x30 = 180 "top 6" forwards in the league.
Chalk up the first 90 places to 1st line players.
So technically between 91 and 180 you have your "2nd line players".
Gagner is 107th amongst all forwards in points. That's 17th amongst 90 "second line players" - or "above-average" for a second liner.
By that measure isn't he an "above-average" second line player?
Wow. So 47 points make you the 17th best 2nd line forward in the league? Thanks because that means the Flyers have 7 forwards that are no less than the 17th best 2nd line forwards in the league seeing how Matt Read, our 7th leading forward scorer also had 47 points. Hmm, JVR was on pace for more than 50 points before he got hurt, Schenn was injured for much of the season & took a while to find his game and Couturier had an excellent season with nearly 40 points while playing on the 4th line and seeing no PP time. We must have the best set of forwards ever seen in tge league. I guess they should just hand us the cup now
Gagner a top end 2nd line center? Just wow. I could see most people rating him somewhere between 50-80 as far as centers alone. Lets not kid ourselves here, he's just not nearly as good (and hence as valuable) as you seem to think.
