Trading the more expendable pieces is a sensible course for Edmonton, but the return is also likely to be modest. A 40-point player like Gagner may not return a young top-four defenseman who shows promise. Perhaps a stalled #4 whose future is uncertain would be a good comparable.
The value of MPS isn't going to rise until he starts putting up NHL points.
You guys should realise Gagner is decent 2nd line center but is trade value will never be real high. On paper, a combo of Gagner + MPS should get you a second pairing Dman but that is not the way it works. There is plenty of these kind of players on the market and in almost every team in the league. Oilers should keep Gagner as their #2 center. Yakupov could be dealt to a NHL ready top 4 dman with top 2 potential or an established top 4 Dman with lower upside + a good first rnd pick.
MPS still have a decent value and could be dealt for the oilers to add dept since there is plenty of oilers forward that can play a similar role.
Gagner and MPS are not worth very much right now so I would rather keep them.
I'm hoping that the Oilers can land Schultz and land a 4-5 defenseman in FA, then the defense won't look too terrible
If Paul Martin for MPS is a deal, I will personally call both player's agents, Steve Tambellini, and Ray Shero to get this **** done. My commission is -50%, to be distributed equally amongst both teams.

The problem with Gagner is if the oilers don't even want him as their 2nd line centre who is going to give up anything of value to get him to centre their second line? You would think a team like Edmonton would like to get deeper at centre but for some "mysterious" reason they want to drop him like a hot potato.
Gagner just isn't good enough to offset the things he doesn't bring to a team and honestly a lot of teams already have small players like him in their system.
It has nothing to do with his skill set, but with 3 (and another incoming) smaller, more skilled forwards in the top six, we want a second line center who is closer to the 6 foot 2, 210 pound area. It`s as simple as that. He`s also the best forward we have who isn`t on the untouchable list. That doesn`t mean we don`t want him, that means we know we have to give a good player to get a defenseman.
