I'm pretty much done with Weber, but by the same token I don't see this team turning it around next season. There are enough extremely weak teams that we could contest for the final playoff spots, but really the future of the team is not ready to compete in the NHL or is young enough to still be in their prime in a couple of years. Strategically, giving Weber another year to try and show he belongs in this league may be a practical thing to do. Guy's not going to win you any hockey games, however.

I never argued that point at all, I actually share your view to a lesser degree. But looking at the situation, I am only guessing what the new GM may want to do. Some people have crazy reasons for doing what they do (look at Milbury....pure crazy right there).

Weber can fill your #6-7 role or could be traded for a pick or another struggling youngster in need of a fresh start

Losing veteran rock on the blueline, Roman Hamrlik and using rookies Diaz and Emelin and inexperienced Weber on the blueline instead is the sole reason for us blowing so many 1 goals leads in the 3rd period.

I'm not saying that Diaz, Emelin or Weber were bad or that I don't like them, but they weren' experienced enough late in the game to defend the lead and help the team win....thats where a more experienced veteran like Hamrlik would have came in handy instead of the slower than cold molasses Hal Gill!!

The habs need to trade either Diaz or Weber and aquire a tough, veteran defencemen that had something to offer and can mentor our young defencemen.

The Penalty Story:

Yes, we had a great PK, but did you know how often it was tested? The Habs were the second-most shorthanded team in the NHL (315 times); only Philadelphia was shorthanded more often (319 times). On a positive note, we actually killed more penalties than anyone else in the league (279 successful PKs), even though NJ had a better percentage.
And yet nearly everyone on this forum wants to drop Plekanec without thinking twice...

Holy hyperbole, batman!

I can understand the disdain for Pleks, though I don't want him gone at all. He's not that great on FOs, he's not that big and he doesn't have high end puck skills. Still he's good value at 5m and doing fine(ish).

If we get him a winger and hope Bourque wakes up, he'll be hard pressed not to get 60.

1. Draft Grigorenko, will make Plekanec expendable.
2. Package Plekanec + 1 scrub trade for an elite winger.
3. Package Kaberle + 1 scrub trade for a physical top 4 defenceman.
4. Package Gionta + 1 scrub trade for a young top 6 winger.
5. Sign best UFA's to max 3 year contracts under 5 mil

Pfff....nothing to this GM job!
