Are The Leafs Re-Tooling or Re-Building?

Burke said he was NOT prepared to share his untouchables list quite yet.
Doing the math for ALL the proposed changes for the "RE-TOOL"
Remember Burke said this will mostly be accomplished through trades.

1-Goalie

2-1st line centre

3, 4 a couple more leaders

5, 6, 7 More toughness

8, 9 couple Marlies will play up next year

Is it possible to have up to 9 new faces on this team next year and NOT consider it a Re-Build?

Which 9 players will be traded or released?
Burke can say what he wants but it sure sounds to me like a Re-Build.
What else do you call it?

A re-tooling. A re-build means youth. We are adding veterans and goaltending help, and hopefully size. It's called a re-tooling.

It may not be 9 bodies. The first line centre could also be one of the leaders. A couple of the Marlies could bring more toughness. Yes the points listed were mentioned in the presser but that doesnt mean that some of those players attributes wouldn't be combined into one acquisition.

Why does it matter what term is used to reflect the changes. I'll wait to see the changes an judge them.

I hate to say it but that is part of rebuilding the team! You may have to make a bunch of moves to get a few players.

If we tale on Connolly, LOmbardi, Komi, Armstrong. Lebda, etc...

To get

Gardiner, Kessel, Lupul, Mac etc...

Then so be it!

Clearly you belive that every move has to be 100% successfull and that no mistakes woudl be made. Kodos to you, if only we were all as perfect!

Burke thought about rebuilding then he ended up with a team with a lot of "tools" on it which aren't working out so know he needs to re"tool" the team.

And a goaltender, and a power-forward, and a first-line center, and a #1D, and some talent on the third and fourth line, and some big gritty players.

Burke specifically corrected somebody who said rebuild yesterday and said it is a retool.

Well all other teams are/were in the same boat at one point. Guess that doesn't make us special.

Its an "accelerated rebuild" remember? The only thing missing has been the accelerated part.

Fact is Burke has an extreme amount of pride (and ego) and won't conceite to his mistake when he first came here that he overvalued who he had on his initial roster when he made the Kessel deal and Komi/Beauch signings, among others. At that time, and for the first two years he was in a 'retool' type of building.

After seeing how the team clearly hadn't improved he moved more towards a 'rebuild' by using all means to acquire young players and draft picks and moving veteran players. This was most evident last year when he dealt Versteeg and Beauch for picks/prospects. It's not a conventional rebuild by any means, but he has succeeded in a sense by acquiring a lot of depth in prospects and former first round picks (5 or 6 within the past few years?).

I'd say he's almost past the 'rebuild' stage, but again the context of rebuild is arguable from person to person. Presently, Burke holds that 5th overall pick to add a legit blue chip asset that the prospect pool needs. With some prospect ready to break through for full time spots, Burke needs to add a couple quality veteran leaders to round out the roaster.. IMO he needs to add 1 core player through FA or a trade that is a veteran player who is a 'go-to' type of leader, as well as add a couple role players with size.

Re-tooling. They've already "rebuilt" from the prospects side of things, they just need to swap out the NHL team with a few different characteristics. When the likes of Broll, Biggs and Ross are of age, this team will be very different from the one we have now.

Well, after 4 years....Burke wasn't going to use the word "rebuild" anyways.....

Next season, he has to be in "win now" mode. Not many franchises, will stick with a GM, who finishes out of the playoffs, 5 straight years...

Or 4, for that matter...

Well, the rebuild part is also MIA, but according to Burke that's also part of the plan.

He definitely said it. He corrected a journalist who used the "rebuild" term.

Apologetic Brian Burke says Maple Leafs will ‘retool’ for next year

http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/...-for-next-year

Here’s how Burke sees the Maple Leafs.

RETOOLING NOT REBUILDING

“It’s not easy to fix a team that’s broken. I had no delusions. I watched GMs get up on their first day and say: ‘I’ve got a five-year plan.’ They’re buying five years out of the gate. I don’t respect that. My view is I was hopeful to do it quicker. We haven’t. But I haven’t changed the plan.”
