The NHL Network previewed the Western Conference playoffs Tuesday night, including the Detroit Red Wings' first-round series against the Nashville Predators.
Here are some notable comments:
On Nashville's Shea Weber and Ryan Suter matching up with Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk:
Kelly Chase: "They're going to make sure that every chance they get to punish Datsyuk -- it's a hard enough thing to do to just catch him -- they're going to be on the ice doing it."
Jamie McLennan: "It's about being physical on Datsyuk, limiting his time in space. You give him time, he'll work magic. If you get caught watching the puck on him, he'll absolutely embarrass you."
On if age will finally catch up with the Red Wings:
Chase: "Every year I think that, and every year I say that, and ever year I'm just about wrong. (Niklas) Lidstrom is one of those guys you know is going to step up. (Todd) Bertuzzi is one of those guys. Tomas Holmstrom did not have a good year this year, but he's a guy in the playoffs who can make it miserable for the goaltender in front of the net. Will there be falloff in this year's playoffs? I'm not sure."
On the matchup of goalies, Detroit's Jimmy Howard vs. Nashville's Pekka Rinne:
McLennan: "These are two great goaltenders who are going to go head to head. He's the backbone of the Detroit Red Wings. He's very good on wraparound plays. Anything in tight, he can take a way. He's a first-shot goaltender. If you're going to beat him, get him moving. There are rebounds there. He's also prone to bad-angle shots. He will give up that odd goal.
"Pecca Rinne, we all know what he's capable of. I think he's one of the best in the business. One of the best glove hands in the game. His weakness? He'll get himself in trouble on that blocker side, because he's a little bit overactive in the net."
On predictions for the series:
Billy Jaffe: "Detroit is in here saying 'one more year.' Detroit in seven."
McLennan: "This is a tough one. We know what the Red Wings can bring to the table. I believe this is Nashville's year. I'm saying Nasvhille's going to take it in seven (games)."
Chase: "I'm taking the Nashville Predators. They've taken that next step. Seven games."

Not shocked at all, but I would be shocked if these weren't tweaked at all as the game went on. Then again, if they aren't, it probably means the Wings are winning
.

Sit Gus ahead of Emmerton? I don't think so. Especially now that Abdelkader can take that 4th line center role.
I still want Conner ahead of Cleary. That would make it the best line up possible, but maybe Danny boy has something to prove.

I can live with giving Cleary a game to see if he's improved at all with the rest he got at the end of the season.
If he's still invisible after this game I'd go with Connor.

It's hard to believe Cleary is still playing. Sounds like he's got some serious damage to the knee already.

Hey Guys, I come in peace
I was just wondering, since I picked a lot of Wings players in my fantasy pool (Rooting for the 3rd finals matchup), Do you think Ian White still have his spot on the #1 powerplay? And do you think he'll move in the top 2 pairings?

He hasn't played on the #1 PP the last little while. Lidstrom and Kronwall have and I don't expect that to change. White is playing on the second unit, though. It's possible he could move back to a pairing with Nick, but this was how we ended the regular season. White's our #5 D heading into the playoffs since Ericsson's been hot.

Abby Nyquist Homer has some potential for damage on the 4th line. Unless they get like 6 minutes. I say we play with 2 3rd lines.

Babcock said Conner, mursak and sheahan out up front. Hasn't decided between Nyquist and emmerton.
How can he even think about scratching Nyquist instead of Emmerton, now that they've got their 4 centers Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Helm-Abdelkader, Emmerton serves no purpose.
